Which of these cards would you, the members, recommend

Taking everything into account, Warranty, price, performance, DX11 V's DX10, efficiency and also the fact that the 295 comes with a water block and i would need to take into account the cost of a block for the 5870

Anyway, Merry Christmas all :)

Fire away!

def go for the hd5870, you will not regret it at all. from what i've seen, and benchmarked, DX11 is def the way forward, and unlike DX10, i reckon 11 will start to be used commonly. And the performance of this card, all i can say is wow!
heck man, if you thinking about getting a 295, try (i hope you have a good job) get 2 5870s in sli for about 150 more, or the 5970. look around and see the performance increase between those cards, and also look at the screen shots of the unigine Heavens benchmark, http://hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTI1NzM4MjE1MjZpek04cDRMQWxfMV8xMl9sLnBuZw== , http://hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTI1NzM4MjE1MjZpek04cDRMQWxfMV8xMV9sLnBuZw== , http://hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTI1NzM4MjE1MjZpek04cDRMQWxfMV81X2wucG5n

after seeing that, i cant see a reason why you would spend so much on a last generation card. do you really want to miss out on the next generation of gaming?

Thanks for all the reply's

I suppose i should mention that the 5870 comes in at £300 and the 295 at £400

make any difference to your answer?

Oh, i don't have a 295 already, i want a single card solution to replace two 285's (although i could W/C both of these?)

ah ok, maybe i was a bit off on the price there. but what you say about single card solution changes everything. if you have the cash then, go for the monster, if it can be called a 'single' card that is :P. else kyle is right, the 5850 is pretty surprising in what it can do, costs only around 270, and is future gaming ready. not a bad deal if you ask me

edit: that 270 should be abou 290 - 300 inc delivery and vat, and my 5870 cost just over 350 inc vat and delivery

Going from 285 SLI to a single 5850 is going to be a bit dissapointing in current titles... even going to a 5870 looks a bit silly - I'd hold onto your money til better DX11 cards are out or DX11 becomes used more... or look at a 5970.

it all depends on what you want. great speeds with 285 sli (for now), or future technology. im a fan of graphics, hence all the dx11 and future gaming ready comments. if you really dont give 2 craps about that and just want speed, yea theres a few great bargains out there
so ignore me if you're the latter

from what i've experienced of DX11, it WILL be used loads, if i had cash after my 5870 purchase i'd guarantee you that and offer you 100 if im wrong haha, thats how confident i am. sure, nvidia is going to kill ati, but then look at the pricing differences between the 2. btw, 58xx is not disappointing at all

If you have 285GTX SLi, there's no point in upgrading to a 5870. Rroff is right, you will be disappointed. Instead, you could look at the 5970 which would be what you are looking for in terms of performance. However, I still think it will be a pointless move unless you're that keen on moving to DX11. I would wait and see what next year offers us.

If i went with the 295 then i would probably add a physx card and be done until the 300's are released, but if i went the way of the 5870 then the plan would definitely be to get a second (fairly soon) and x fire them - that or swap the 5870 for a 5970 when they start to return to stock and have a look at the 300's when they are released

Does that change your answers at all :p

(we'll get there soon, i promise
