Xonar DG - ultimate budget headphone card?

The drivers on the disc up-mix all stereo audio to 5.1 which (in my opinion) sounds awful, apparently the newer drivers fix this issue.

Personally I use the UNi drivers (official drivers 'fixed') because of the up-mix and latency problems and to play with ASIO. The UNi drivers are here if you want to have a look, otherwise the latest official drivers are probably the best.

Does anyone have any tips for what settings things should be set to for Dolby Headphone?

Currently i'm using the UNi drivers with the standard install (should I be using the Low Latency or the C-Media panel?), with the following settings:

Audio Channel: 8 Channels
Sample Rate: PCM 44.1KHz
Analog Out: Headphone
Dolby Headphone: Enabled (DH-1)

Windows Speaker Config: 7.1

Battlefield Bad Company 2: "Home Cinema" (Is that right? or should it be "Hi Fi" or "Headphone"?)

The Low Latency and C-Media panels are just alternatives to the standard Xonar one. As for settings there's no right or wrong settings, just what gives the most accurate representation to you. I personally use DH-2, 8 channels, 7.1 shift with the central speaker slightly forward.

Yep, Robbie G, has the 555's and a DG. He is still having front audio interference issues by the look of it, although that's no fault of the sound card, just the case. He was quite impressed I seem to remember.

right got it, in xonars control panel, ive done that and theres still no sound

All sorted now, thanks to all that helped

But i have a question, is there anyway to have teamspeak coming through as just stereo whilst in game is using dolby headphone, TS sounds awful with dolby headphone on

Just noticed when I switch from 5.1 to headphone and vice versa using the control panel there is an audible click from the hardware, is this normal?

Yep completely normal. I worried the same as you at first but it's just the relays firing when you switch from speakers to the headphone due to the amp.

I purchased these to replace my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio hoping it'd be an improvement, but I was wrong. I'll probably get some stick for giving it negative feedback but after doing a bit of research it seems the X-Fi's are better than these and aren't in the same bracket for comparison. Will be selling these on and sticking with my SB X-Fi.

That's very interesting. I have an X-Fi Xtreme Music, and it does sound better than the DG. But that was a £50 card. I'm surprised however, that the Xtreme Audio sounds better than the DG.

Of course, some people do prefer the Creative sound, so that may play a part.

Truth be told they were both fine when I used them with my Z5500's, however with my beats by dre studio hd's the SB X-Fi beat the xonar DG

Aren't those optical though, which means the card isn't processing any sound anyway. I must admit though, I find it much easier to spot sound issues with headphones rather than speakers, probably due to the immediacy you get from cans.
