Xonar DS SPDIF problem

Hi,

I just bought an Xonar DS which I want to connect to my Creative 2800 Digital speakers. It works on Analog but not on the SPDIF port (speakers and card both have analog and digital input/output).
1- should I bother trying to make it work on digital? Am I going to notice much of a difference?
2- The Creative speakers come with an RCA male (connected to the speakers) and an RCA male to mono mini jack converter (connected to the Xonar SPDIF port). In the Xonar Audio Center I tick SPDIF out. I've tried different options to no avail. The default playback device is set to Speakers and not Digital Output (in Vista x64) as suggested on the Asus forum. I am running the original drivers that shipped with the card (no updates available on Asus website).

Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

If you are wanting to go the digital route, the defult playback device will need to be Digital Output wouldnt it? so vista pumps the sound through that way and not analog.
personally though, if you cant get it working in the 10,20mins of trying, i would just use analog connections, its not going to make that much of a difference at all. really its just the single wire and not lots of connections which is the main draw to digital... (unless you got crapy / good dacs on your soundcard or speakers)

It's a 2.1 set of desktop speakers, so to be honest it's probably not worth it. The DAC in the soundcard is probably better than the one in the speaker set.
