Set channels to whatever your source material is. This is generally:
* 2 channel for music
* 6 channel for most DVDs
* 8 channel for games and blu-ray or DVDs with 6.1 soundtracks.
Set analogue out to headphones.
Set the impedance on the headphone amp to suit the headphones you're using.
Try out the 3 Dolby Headphone options and see whether you prefer it on or off, and which version you prefer. I would generally recommend DH1 for most usage but that's down to personal taste. DH2 and DH3 simulate a larger 'room' with more ambient effects.
If you're using Dolby Headphone for music I would recommend that pro-logic II is left off. It's for upmixing to 5.1 but I find that a lot of stereo music has decent soundstage information that is audible with Dolby Headphone alone but distorted if any sort of upmixing is used.
Edit: potentially big loss of quality form using the front panel. Make sure you use the dedicated headphone amp built in to the soundcard (I think the Front Panel bypasses this. I could be wrong about that though).
Thanks Uriel, I'm wondering about the front panel connector myself. Its just a lot more convenient using the front connectors. I'll just use it from the back from now. Cheers.
