Ok, So I understand the 4GB limit in XP 32bit, but what would happen if you also had 4GB video memory, what exactly then would the system address?

Spec is

I7 920
6GB
2x 4870x2

The system doesnt have an OS yet, but they want XP Pro for their existing software packages

I've said they should get Vista Home Premium X64, but a lot of their software isnt compatible

32 bit vista will see 3.5g sys memory, 64 bit will see 4g, the video memory will be used by the graphics system not tthe operating system.

what software is incompatible? Tell them to vote with their money and find something that is x64 compatible - it's not like this has been sprung on us!

An alternative might be to run XP x86 in a virtual machine when they need to run these legacy apps.

Or if they're dead set on XP why not XP Pro x64 (obviously dependant upon software compatibility).

Personally I would go for Vista x64 of some sort but if they're shouting for XP Pro and it works with what they have then give them that.
