XP verus VISTA for a hardcore gaming PC

4870X2 has 2gigs of VRAM total (2x1024) which would be taken from your total RAM... infact you'd prolly only see around 1.85gig available RAM with a 32Bit OS.

He will still be left with less than 3GB though.

But enough. I have a dual boot system (best of both worlds) and I find that the xp system with 3Gb is faster than the vista system with 4gb.

Maybe different if you have 8Gb.

ANyway,I did the dual boot since I have hardware/software which is still not supported in Vista.

XP-x64! \o/

XP x64 is basically windows server 2003, in the shiny XP wrapper, giving it SUPERB reliability. i think the only time my install of XP x64 has bluescreened, it was due to dodgy nVidia drivers.

All modern hardware supports XP x64, as far as i'm aware.

If you are using an ATI Radeon 4870 X2 then in all honesty, you will want to be using a 64-bit operating system otherwise if you are only using a 32-bit operating system, the system will only address around 2.4GB of RAM, give or take. :)

Yeah all "modern hardware" maybe. As in the last 6-12 months. Not so good for me with hardware I have kept from my old build.

Software is the worst and I object having to pay £100's to upgrade all my software to vista 64 compatible stuff hence the dual boot.

But I agree, if your hardware and software supports it, go Vista 64

Vista x64 is Windows 2008 server, which is more reliable and flexible than Windows 2003 server.

For those who are about to flame me, how many "Windows 2008 is crap" type reports have you seen? Probably the best received M$ OS to date.
