That tickbox does NOTHING, it doesnt remember the username or password EVER

Does for me, although you do have too retype it ever 24-48 hours. As an extra security device.

if i just close the window it logs me out completely, not even my username is remembered

Actually, gmail wins because not only is it the best online e-mail client (by a million miles) but the google custom homepages are amazing.

Me, I use it for sites that I don't want to have my 'real' email address and for signing up to things. It's just another throw away email address for me.
