Yet another what camera thread - £250 budget

Looking for a point and shot camera for my parents xmas pressie, something along the lines of the canon s80 I used to have - easy to use with good battery life, but a few options for playing around with.

What should I be looking at?
 
It's hardly comprehensive enough yet, still needs some building up before threads like mine become unneccesary.

Is the canon G series the sucessor to the s series? Do any of canon's A series have manual controls? Should I be looking at other manufacturers?

Lots of things a sticky wont cover,
 
The G series is not a replacement over the S series. Canon have pulled the S series earlier in the year with no replacement, the S series have been going for years, the G7 is a current favourites among a lot of photographers, it is a very capable camera.

The A series is more consumer orienated but it still have all the manual controls and will suit the needs for a majority of people.
