Thinking of re-locating to York due to work.

IS there anyone who lives in or around York who can recomend the nice areas to live and the areas to avoid? Preferably looking for somewhere that is on the outskirts verging toward more rural than city centre.

Cheers

Depending on what you're used to most of York is fairly nice. I'd avoid Clifton, Acomb and the Tang Hall Lane area though. Fulford and Heslington have nice bits but are very studenty. My pick in what I'd consider York would be Dringhouses or if you wanted to live further in then Southbank.

If you were happy to live outside the city then I'd be looking at Rufforth

I grew up in York, its a great city. I'd recommend somewhere like Huntington or Heslington to live.

If you don't mind a 12-14 mile commute then Wetherby, or any surrounding villages (and maybe Tadcaster) are rural areas just off the A1 that might suit you.

They're close enough to York to make the commute bearable, have good transport links (no train though) but also you get the advantage of being equidistance from Leeds, Harrogate and York - so that could fulfill your City/Nice Spa Town/Historic fulfillments.

I'm in York now...moved here 5 years ago or so...

Love it. Awsome place. Just big enought to have plenty to do...not too big as to have any huge crime / social problems. Its a totally beautiful centre too.

Housing can be expensive.....Clifton Moor and Rawcliffe on the north side are reasonable and nice...on the edge of the city but still within touch of the center. I often walk home after a night out, its a handy size.

Fulford on the south is nice, and has more period / character property. Is expensive though. Depends where you work though. Its the sort of place where no matter where you work its possible to find a nice area within a cycle ride. I cycle into the center when working there, and in fact cycle past the center to a place i am working now. Its actually handier to get around on a cycle than a car, its not really a car friendly city. Which is a good thing imo.

Literally dozens of villages within 15 mins drive....lots up the A19 and A59 north of York....but again the drive won't be great, lots of traffic heading into town. I prefer living on the edge of the city proper and getting the cycle out.

Tang Hall, represent. It's fine there, honest.

Where's the work?

Well I will be working on the road all around North Yorkshire. So probably York, Knaresbrough maybe up to Malton and Pickering as well I am not 100% as the details will be worked out when or if I take the job.

Been trawling the estate agents with the lass and whilst we would move within the area of York it would be on the North side of York as we dont want to be too far south. York is about an hour from where I live currently for our families which is just about perfect.

Seen a few houses in Hunsington or something like that which look quite nice. Not particularly certain at the mo

edit: Whats wrong with Acomb? Saw a few nice houses in that area

I lived in Huntington for about 2 years, it was very nice and only 10 to 15 minutes walk from the centre. There is a huge horrible council estate near it though which hurts it in some parts :o

Fantastic city to live in though, you will not regret it one bit :)

What about a place called Skelton? Looks like its just north or the ring road. Smallish village

If your on the road, possibly look into Northallerton or surrounding villages??

Nice place to live, bout 40 min from the likes of malton, 40 - 50 to Pickering.

not bad house prices etc etc.

I live here, used to commute to Malton everyday. loved every minute of the drive, the views are amazing!

Are you looking to buy or rent? could help you out getting with the areas if needs be...

Will be buying.

Narrowed it down to half a dozen properties around Huntsingotn, Skelton and some random named place-on-some random river.

Just have to see what they are like next

What budget are you looking at?

There is a 3 bed detached house down my street in need of modernisation, one of the best parts of town, is in the catchment of the best school in town, and a few strides away from country side you can walk on :)

200k we could possibly push it a bit higher but the property would have to be absoloutly perfect for us to go any higher than 200.

Perfect school (with her being a teacher as well) and country side sounds great

Skelton's nice, when you get away from the A19. Got a village green type of thing, with 13th century church (iirc)

You'll be needing a car to go to any place other than a pub. I'm not even sure they got a shop.

Thought it was Shipton with the old church.

The ring road can be/is hell at peak times. And full of idiot inconsiderate drives that insist on blocking roundabouts

Should always have been a dual carriageway, but it's only single. It can take a while to get around from the A64 (leeds/scarborough) to the A59 (towards knaresborough/harrogate) - can even take a while to get from A19 (thirsk/teeside/north) to A59 due to the aforementioned titheads.

Car is definitely needed, though, but I guess you got that covered if you'll be working on the road. You could live in somewhere like strensall or haxby, but they're further east round the ringroad on the north side and can be awkward to get to/from, depending on where you're going.

It's not a bad sort of place to live.

details please?

Suburbs I'd recommend: New Earswick, Heworth, Huntington, Haxby, Fulford, Rawcliffe, Osbaldwick, Dunnington

More rural places I'd recommend: Stockton-on-the-Forest, Linton-on-Ouse, Warthill, Holtby, Murton, Shipton, Stamford Bridge

Avoid Tang Hall, Clifton and Acomb.

As others have said, avoid Tang Hall. Lived there in my 2nd year of uni, and have plenty of stories to tell, but wouldn't live there again!

Fulford is nice, but pretty studenty - it's also where Steve McClaren was born, which ought to be enough to turn anyone away from living there!

Jokes aside, York is a fantastic place, and I would love to live there again at some point in the future.
