You know at the end of shutter island where he says...

If you liked this, you'll really enjoy The Prestige too

Couldn't agree more, absolutely love that film. Scarlet Johannson ;)

I thought Shutter Island was a great film and I would like to watch it again knowing the ending, so as to see the subtle details that tell you what is *actually* going on. Always a sign of a good film when it makes you want to watch it again.

Also thought that DiCaprio has been fantastic on his last two films, both two of my favorite films this year easily.

I would say yes, I dont remember really seeing the twist coming too much, i had my suspicious but there was always other possibilities.

Unlike that POS 'Book of Eli' film where they gave the plot twist away about 2 minutes into the film then continued to post giant billboard sized signs throughout the film before finally at the end acting like *shock horror, what a twist we have written!!!111!!*

So, this part of the film, is recently after they confronted him while he woke up in bed, and after the graphic scene of his wife drowning the children. Those scenes were to show his realisation and admittence to the actions. When he's on the step with his Phyc, he knows he'll drift back into hiding from the actions he committed, and in a selfless manner, no longer wanting to lie to himself to continue living, opts for the lobotomy.

The most enjoyable part of the film for me was the way in which they present him substituting situations with his subconsious. Placing his darkest secrets on others and trying to divert his mind to other things. Yet they haunt him and his mind fights between reality and a charade.

Good film. I also enjoyed, Inception; The Departed; Memento; 12 Angry Men.

Yet to see The Prestige. I'll take your recommendation!

You could certainly think he was an inmate early on, but that was clearly not the only option, the film could have gone any which way.

Also just because he turned out to be nuts, they can still write a second film on the premise that he really was an agent, really did come to the island, there really is a secret testing lab, and someone else comes to find him. they can do anything really, which is really what writing is. The film was writen in such a way that they could twist the plot to have meant something different to what you thought you saw in the "first" film if they did indeed make a second one.

As per usual though, Di Caprio's acting was superb, the film was very good, the film was predictable in so much as him being an inmate was an obvious possible ending/outcome, but it wasn't the ONLY possible outcome for the vast majority of the film. Other actually predictable films you can see the only possible outcome and the only direction the film can go very early on.

I guessed he was an inmate before I even saw the film, once I heard that there was a huge twist at the end and I had heard the plot synopsis ....was pretty obvious what the twist could be.

Pretty much spoilt the film for me...

I call bs, you may have realised there was something dodgy going on

It became apparent in the other thread that virtually everybody who had worked the twist out were also the people who had seen the trailers which gave a lot away.
I on the other hand saw no trailers and watched it as a linear film not realising there were any twists in it and I went oooooooooh at the end.

I knew the name of the film, and that Leo was in it when I saw it, that was it.

Though it was coming across as a thriller rather than a plain old detective show, I should watch the trailer maybe it narrows down the potential twists to only him being an inmate.

Thats why I try as hard as possible to avoid all adverts for everything.

About the mid 90's adverts went from intriguing to just about laying out the entire plot, all the best jokes in a comedy, all the twists in a thriller, all the big explosions and half the good lines(all 4 of them) in an action flick, who the love interest is/if they bang in a romatic pile of poop.

I went to see The other guys at the cinema and the adverts, were surprisingly few but spoilt the films entirely, its why I avoid the cinema now as it ruins films for me and are hard to ignore while sitting in there. One was just ridiculous, basically showed this kids parents get killed the two "don't get on god parents" went on a date, got the kid had to live together, fell in love, boinked, lived happily ever after and showed most of the best jokes, truly ridiculous advert, there will be nothing in the film you didn't realise from the advert.

The trailer was criticised. As it portrayed the film as Horror. Showed the majority of his flashbacks. Instead of showing it as a standard detective movie, like it should have been.

I thought the film was amazing because I loved the cinematography and it kept me guessing all the way through, I never realised he was an inmate. And I thought the story was really good and I cant believe his wife killed his 3 kids by drowning them in their back garden lake, that was so terrible! I was like oh god, please no! lol, and then he comes home from work to find out what she's done and he's so disturbed by it I guess he's filled with rage and disbelief and even though he loves his wife he kills her for what she's done to their kids, maybe he did this to put her out of her misery since she's gone totally insane?

Just imagine what happened to him happened to you, that would be a nightmare scenario that you wouldn't wish on anybody, really really sad.

And it makes it even more sad the fact that he ended up in a mental institute and he was so messed up by it all that his brain couldn't handle it so he went crazy because of a broken heart.

All of this heart break because of a situation where his wife went insane, 5 life's ruined forever.

By the way, howcome his wife went insane anyways? The film never really explained that part did it?

Yup,

Now I only watch the teasers (if that)

Glad others came to the same conclusion.

I discussed my interpretation of his finishing line and the casual way he walked off with the nurses with others and they did not agree.

By the way, how come his wife went insane anyways? The film never really explained that part did it?

She has manic depression (bi-polar), there doesn't need to be a reason for this, it just happens via a chemical imbalance in the brain. Some but not all have some event that trigger it.
