You think your TV does 1080p ???

If signals like 576i & 720p were not being upscaled or stretched went displaying on a 1080i/p screen then you would have only a small picture in the centre of the screen...

(I.E If displaying at 1:1 then the lower the res of the input signal the smaller the picture on the screen would be)
 
I have a Sony 46X2000 which does true 1080p just fine, I bought it so I could get the most out of my Blu-ray player and use 1:1 pixel mapping at 1080p
