Everybody lies :p

or, not everyone is competent.

I think they should at least be given the choice, then its down to them whether they do it right or not.

Erm, let's just say getting a swab to the cervix tends to be pretty invasive, and would be very hit-and-miss should someone try doing it to themselves.

It is quite embarrassing, yes. But it's one of those things every woman should just grit their teeth and get on with. Shame that the embarrassment stops people.

Eve, surely?

If anyone is in any doubts how invasive the procedure is, do a Google image search for a 'speculum'. Probably not entirely safe for work.

Don't think its any worse than having your penis looked at, it's embaressing but you just have to get over it if you want to find out!

How big is the Cervix? :o

I would have said it's more fear of the discomfort than the embarrassment myself. It is vitally important to get it done though. No one likes them but they're over in minutes.

As for self testing, I can't see many women being able to manage to get enough cells for testing without using a speculum.

I've been doing smears and pelvic exams all week, certainly not a DIY job, its an invasive and very sensitive procedure. Passing a speculum is a task in itself, very easy to hurt someone pretty good with one of them.

Oh and I really hate Obs and Gynae too :(

Its not big, its just far back.

Yeah, sometimes its facing forwards, sometimes its looking straight at you, and sometimes its facing backwards, awkward things.

Fortunately with the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine being licensed we'll probably see the end of cervical smear screening programs in the next few decades.

Seeing my first birth was traumatic, not sure how anyone manages more than one kiddie. The gynae isn't so bad, just a bit minging :D

'Please Sir, don't make me look at ladybits again!'

For a serious thread I haven't laughed so much in ages!
