Your current Fish tank Setups!

So mines took a turn for the worse, had a power cut and when I reset the fuses it had blown up all the water pumps in the tank. It happened at night so could do nothing until the next day, by that time most of the corals were stripped or dying, but luckily the fish all survived.

Things go bad real quickly!!!

lesson learnt but what ever fish you keep always keep a spare heater and an air pump with sponge filter, hindsight is a wonderfully thing :)

With the cost and effort required on a marine tank i made sure to keep back up heaters and powerheads.

Too much to lose if something like that happened.

I did have a power cut for about 12 hours one time tho. That wasnt fun. Had to wrap the tank in towels and boil water on stove and float hot water bottles in the top as it was middle of winter and an old house that got very cold.

My paired Rams look like spawning is imminent.

They've both been picking at this rock all day and the female behind is constantly laying on it as if she's getting comfortable. Baby time soon I think. They won't survive, will just be cool to see.

Latest update. We have babies.

In this photo, the babies are clumped together. They are in the depression in the sand, by the small pink rock. When you look closely, you can see them wriggling. They are absolutely minute.

Hello, I have been interested in getting a fish tank for some time now, I like the idea of them being relaxing and enjoying to watch, the lights shining on the coral/plants etc.

I have absolutely no idea where to start though, and I do not know much about fish either! I would like to keep tropical fish but I understand they are difficult to maintain?

If anyone could point me in the right direction to learn the basics I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi Sonni and welcome to the fishkeeping part of the forums, maybe get a few beginner books just for reference to learn the basics of fishkeeping, or the power of the internet, a good start is a community tank for you where all the fishes get along, be prepared to do routine maintenance, learn about the cycle proccess(very important) get a budget put aside and lets see what we can get you. :)

Having seen a variety of different water hardness charts, which all seem to differ, I was wondering what people considered the scale to be themselves?

For example :

0 - 4 dGH 0 - 70 ppm very soft

4 - 8 dGH 70 - 140 ppm soft

8 - 12 dGH 140 - 210 ppm medium hard

12 - 18 dGH 210 - 320 ppm fairly hard

18 - 30 dGH 320 - 530 ppm hard

over 30 dGH over 530 ppm very hard

Secondly, does anyone know why when you reach a certain level of hardness (e.g. 4), why it might not drop any further down the scale? I have some ideas as to what could cause this, but would value any suggestions.

My fry are free swimming. This is when they start to get picked off fast. Feeding them brine shrimp atm. I know the substrate looks dirty, but that is the Rams. For the last few days, they have done nothing but pick crap out from plant roots to make hidy holes to put their fry.

Your chart is pretty much bang on, other than I consider anything over 25 as very hard.

Hey guys I need your advice please :)

I have just purchased a 600 Litre Marine tank yay !

Could someone please advise me on the best RD Filter to buy to make my own RD water ?

There are so many I don't know what one too buy. I want one that will make say 100 - 200 litres aday . also how long do the filters last ect ?

Paid just a pound each for 2 male bristlenose plecs. Both as good 5 iches so not far off maximum size. Settled in nice with the 3 females I already had.

My kribs bred in the community tank and they did a good job of protecting the fry. 3 or 4 survived

I have this one and it's doing a good job, i also had to get a booster pump as my water pressure is rubbish, TDS Meter is also needed.

From the info ( Pre-filters should be replaced every 6 months or 2500gallons)
