Your next dream car : official McLaren MP4-12C stats released

Any chance we could keep this thread on track rather than going on about swapping engines out of Ferrari's please guys :)

Wasn't a fan of the 12C looks to begin with, but it's growing on me - it's looking less boring now and more subtle (well to me anyway).

Seems very fast too, liking the sound of the active suspension - looks like it could very well become a supercar that's actually quite enjoyable to drive on a day to day basis.

12C looks like it needs another model in the range, a higher model with a more aggressive bodykit. The looks just seem so understated when compared with ferrari and lamborghini.

I might be imagining this, but I think I remember McLaren saying they were looking at making a more focused version further down the line.

This is going to be their 'mid-range' model, they've stated before they plan on a halo hypercar and also a porsche 911 range car too.

A good friend of mine has been involved in the development of the engine for this car and has seen other parts of the development and is glad to see it greeted with a pretty warm reception by the press!

I'd be interested to see their 911 rival. I was thinking yesterday that it'd be good if they produced a 50k car, but this would probably be too low an entry point for McLaren. I can see it being 75-80k like the V8 Vantage. They wouldn't be able to offer the same degree of precision engineering and expertise in a 50k motor I suppose, especially if it's hand built.

The Ferrari is a beautiful car with great performance however less than stellar reliability, swap the engine for one considered to be one of the best ever made and your away, all the benefits non of the drawback, unless your some kinda Ferrari fanboy ofc :P

Sorry, I thought you were using humour. You were actually serious about taking a 288GTO and putting a ricer engine in it?
:(

While the idea is not something that I necessarily agree with (I think a 1UZ-FE V8 would be an infinitely better choice if you were to stick a Toyota engine in an old Ferrari) people seem to be seriously underestimating the 2J for seemingly no other reason because it is Japanese.

Is it really that difficult to consider that the Japanese might have just built a 'better' engine?

Nobody is seriously underestimating anything. You do know what a 288 GTO is and why it would be incredibly foolish to fit it with a Toyota engine, don't you?

Of course I agree it is an utterly stupid thing to even think about doing, but it certainly isn't a stupid idea just because the Ferrari lump is 'superior' like it seems that some people are trying to imply.

When it was released it was about as good as it got, this engine is the same engine they put in the F40. Evolution always see's improvements on paper, to see such things as a paper/bhp decision is to become a geek not a petrolhead. Sum of the parts, the 288 GTO is so much more than that. Supra engine in a 288GTO, nah, I'll go with the 458 engine please........hell even the flat 6 out of the GT3 RS and most certainly the GT2 RS engine, but you just wouldn't.....not ever never ever. Supra engine makes big power, it's hardly seen as one of the iconic engines though I'd suggest, just another big power Jap turbo.

I think one word sums it up:

Character

something that prior to the V10 in the LFA, japanese engines didn't really have.

I think this is where our interests in specific types of cars are going to differ and make us form different opinions, but I suggest that the 2J isn't 'just another big power jap turbo' lump, but rather that it is THE big power jap turbo lump. When modified properly It'll make power easier, cheaper and more reliably than 99% of other engines on this planet. Even in standard form it is a smooth, refined, 'powerful' (326bhp in export spec guise) engine

Among certain groups of enthusiasts it is just as iconic as the Cosworth YB, and while it may never have the 'universal' appeal of the YB (at least in this country) it is an utterly fantastic engine if Straight 6s float your boat.

It seemed to be that people were thinking that the 2J was a bad engine, rather than fiddling with a 288GTO full stop was a bad idea :).
