Your next SLR - What are you looking for?

Except you never get anywhere close to the theoretical resolution of the sensor anyway. You will hit diffraction limits by 7MP on a 1.5X crop at f/11.

The measured resolution differences between the high MP sensors and the low MP sensors is very minimal because they suffer massively form diminishing returns due to diffraction. However, the noise differences are real. In the end it is about the SNR, which doesn't increase with higher marketing pixels. What you end up with is slower cameras, bigger memory cards, slower post processing, bigger HDDs, and lens resolving power has to go right at the Nqyist frequency by using the best possible lenses stopped down to the best aperture.

If one wants to generate a higher resolution then modern software like genuine fractals will happily upscale technically perfect images, good enough for Alamy/Getty/Corbis.

Pssst. you forgot that if we are talking about high-iso theres a good chance you'll be shooting at f/2.8 or lower anyway. ;) Diffraction ain't no factor. And the 1DIV doesn't start to diffract untill f/10, and it's imperceptible until f/16 or so.

Note the fact you won't ever loose sharpness from extra resolution.
You just won't get the benefit of the extra resolution. ;)

Spot on.

To be honest my 5DMKII has been nearly all the camera I've ever wanted. Not to confuse me with someone who always drones on about "Oh if it just had this it would be perfect", because AFAIC it's one damn near perfect camera for what I use it for anyway. I'm just hoping with the 5D3 they stop chasing the high ISO dragon and concentrate on giving it a truly kick-all-ass super clean high dynamic range low ISO for the bazillions of people using these as studio cameras.

Next SLR, probably change my 50D backup to a 5Dmk2 inline with my main camera or wait to the 5Dmk3 arraives flog the 50D to go towards that. I have recently just sorted my lens line up and for what i do i would maybe want 1 or 2 more lenses max.

As my debts will be paid off in January I'm looking to get a lens first, but then a step up from my 30D. Possibly just a flat upgrade to the 60D. I'd like a 5DMKII though, but it'll be towards the end of next year realistically :(

Unless they do some pretty radical changes or add some game changing features, I cant see myself buying another DSLR again. My 5DII does everything I want and more.

I will probably change to whatever replaces the 7D or Mk2 version of the &d if they improve the low light abilites. Most of my pictures are in lower light and the 7D would be worse than what I already have. I'd like the wireless flash ability of the 7D and extra AF points but the average low light ability puts me off until the next revision/replacement.

The 7D has very good light performance for a APSC sensor camera. Perhaps not as good as say a 5D MkII, still very good in low light.
I use my 7D in low light and I am very happy with it's performance.

Still got an Olympus E-10 from about 10 years ago, still not got a proper camera and not taking pics until I get one.

I'm almost in the position to buy. Looked at second hand 40D and 1D for about the same price (~£500). Not sure if the size of the 1D will bother me or not. Then there's glass etc.

Not sure which route to go, which team to bat for (Canon/Nikon) and what level I sit at. I know I can see and compose a decent shot, I have the usual recommended books to learn the intricacies and I know I will get a lot of out if as I have had a lot out of the Olympus but I've well and truly grown out of it.

The new 60D does tempt me at £1200 with kit lens, but will the body material be good enough? The Olympus I have is metal construction and has taken a ton of abuse and has had major repairs once in its life. I know the 40d has a decent body and there seems to be a lot of them up for sale at the moment with little usage however I fear they're too out of date now compared to a 50/60D and video does interest me too.

So, my next SLR will be... no idea! But I hope to make my mind up and get it sorted. Feel like I'm wasting a talent of mine which I've not yet fully explored :(

I must be one of the very few on here now that still has a 350D. Ghetto. I'd love to upgrade, and whilst technically I have the money saved, I'm attempting to save up for a flat deposit at the moment. Unfortunately life gets in the way of shiny new stuff :(

All donations gratefully accepted ... I'll give you an extra point in the competition ;). Who could turn down an offer like that?

I know the feeling, I'm in the same situation.

he says about to leave for vegas on saturday :D

I'm starting to feel that the weight of my 1D mark iiN is a problem although it's a joy to handle.
I'll be using it next week in S.Africa but I will hire a 7D when I return to see if it's worth making the change.
