Your opnion on living in Britain

It's a nation of smug effete self-righteous morally superior know-it-all busybodies... and the feral children they live in fear of.

The UK used to be a nice place in the 60s now it's a **** hole.

When my late father came in 1956 I think from Pakistan. He said Britain was so beautiful. The people welcomed you, different races got along and everyone worked their backside off in the factories. Definitely a different place to what it is today.

Australia has a very precarious economy at the moment.

They are heavily exposed to the slow down in Chinese economy.
Their resource boom has peaked.
Their housing bubble didn't crash like the rest of the world, only grew worse and looks set to pop sooner rather than later.
The AUS dollar is overpriced, which is a problem when the country runs a permanent trade deficit.

Austrailia has been sitting rosy the last few years while the rest of the west has struggled, but they're going to have to worry about their own economy pretty soon.

That said, they're still better of than the EU :D

Having travelled Australia for 5 months and being English, Australia is definitely the better place, but the location of the UK plus my friends and family in the UK means that I could never really uproot and leave it all behind.

If I had a choice however of which country to be born in it would go Australia > Japan > Uk or NZ > Rest of the world > America.

I love this country but after living in the US for six years i would say the UK isnt what it used to be. People seem a lot less friendly here than the states and dont get me started on the total lack of respect and self entitlement that kids have these days, it's bordering on ridiculous.

From what I've seen ... ;

Canada > Sweden > OZ/NZ > UK > Western Europe > USA ........... rest of the world.

I'd love to live in British Columbia. One of the islands close to Vancouver.

100% this, quite a few people in the UK don't know how good they've got it, IMHO.

Perfect example, weekend just gone I had to pay off an airport security official in Kazakhstan after he hauled us into his office. Coming back to the UK is always a joy.

How much you give him, Dollars?

I've heard the stories about Nigeria, they always ask you 'what have you got for me?'

God's blessing my friend :D

Lucky him, my Polish Grandparents were treated like scum in general 'Sned them back home' and all that jazz.... Yup, lets tootle off back to Poland/Ukraine and live under the Soviets, silly Poms!

Being an EU citizen from Cyprus that just started work in the UK, I can say that the UK has a very good system in place. Cyprus itself has an almost identical system to the UK (it's no surprise really as Cyprus was in the possession of the English before it became independent) offering free medical care, having a good government system etc, but still, even though the population is 100 times less than the UK, the UK system thrives in comparison.

The positives for the UK are the solid economy due to the lots of services it provides, the manufacturing that is now expanding with lots of companies investing in factories and jobs, the massive plots of land and animals that can supply a lot of the country with food, a very good (albeit a "bit" expensive) mass transport system... etc.

The negatives for me are the taxes but I guess that's for providing all these services to the public, but even then, the jobs here are much better in a professional expertise way and the salaries are MASSIVE.

I'm a mechanical engineer and if I stayed in Cyprus for work (if I found one which I doubt) I would get paid 1/3 of my salary here and living expenses are higher as well.

$20 in the end, I knew what was going down soon as he asked me to follow him, business travellers must be like walking cash machines for these people, once they look at your travel class then you're doomed.

Could have been worse, I almost got thrown in jail in Africa, but that's a story for another day.

Yep. They always seem to want something for nothing in certain parts of Africa. In Kenya I was advised to stay in the hotel compound. Naturally I wandered out. Within 10min I had a tail for at least 10 kids following me wanting something. I had a pen and chucked it over their heads down the road. They all dashed for it. Quite hilarious. Next time I'm bringing all my 1p coins and doing the same with it!

We're pretty lucky having the NHS and we still have the Monarchy.

I don't like the fact that our major companies are going abroad such as Cadbury's which means that we become more of an importer than exporter. This also includes outsourcing callcentres off-shore. You don't get this in Germany.

For those defending the UK's weather on page 1..... WHA....?!

Interesting, the second page of comments was a lot more degrading toward Britain than the first. Will never stop amazing the range of attitudes you will find in the world.

Don't mind the weather at all. I like it wet and warm ;)

We have too many taxes. Taxes on earning, spending, saving, living, travelling, staying at home, breathing... And lots of things are overpriced.

I'm sure there are much worse places, but we're not a shining beacon of progress either. We seem to be a very middle-of-the-road western nation with typical western values.

TBH, I think I could live in most western European and English speaking countries without issue. There's really nothing special about the UK.
