Your questions on Sweden answered!

Is it true that the government changed the constitution so that you no longer have to be swedish to hold sensitive or high ranking positions within the government and didn't consult the people?

Is it true that sweden is now the rape capital of europe?

Do you notice much anti-Semitism?

Do you feel like the government is turning against the Swedish people?

1) No idea.

2) Probably not.

3) Never seen any anti-semetism, and I've got a massive nose.

4) I don't but some people do (including the gf). I'm still in that "I can't believe they do so much for the people" place in my mind. The Swedes are used to it, so a bit peeved at the coalition taking away loads of workers rights etc.

Have you explored any of the many islands off the coast?

Nope, but our old art director had a nuclear bunker in one of them for the apocalypse. The pics he took of the island were dead nice, and many Swedes go to "the islands" for their holidays.

Thanks, I'd be intrigued to know if you can find out about that first one, maybe drop it in to a conversation some time? :)

Jedeye, how involved is it to take a permenant job over there and just how horrendous is the tax?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'involved'.

As for ease of getting setup, I had to follow these steps.

1) Go to alien registration office to say that I have a job here and I want to live here. 15 minutes waiting and getting registered. Probably more if you are not an EU citizen, but for brits it's dead easy.

2) Go to tax office and get a birthnumber. 10-15 minutes (birthnumber is like a NI number, kinda)

3) Go to bank and get a swedish bank account 15 mins.

4) ...

5) Profit???

Super ridiculously easy.

Taxes are not as crazy as I thought they would be. They are tiered on income like UK taxes, but a bit higher. Swedish wages however, are much more than their UK counterparts. I make double the money here that I did in the UK.

Also the tax office, every year, will send you a letter telling you how much they owe you, not how much you owe them. You can send them a text message and they will put the money straight into your bank account, or do nothing and recieve it a couple of months later. The UK tax office should really take lessons from them.

How difficult was it for you before you learnt Swedish? I'm assuming you learnt Swedish. :p

I haven't fully learnt Swedish, enough to understand what people are talking about, so conversational level I guess, but not fluent.

There is a reason for this though. The company I work for has loads of foreigners. The office language is English. They gave me free Swedish lessons on company time too, but in three years I have only met two people who don't speak English. A 80 year old Iranian lady who looks after the ciggy shop for her son sometimes (she also doesnt speak swedish) and one other person.

English is everyones second language in Sweden, and they all know it realy well. They start learning from the age of 5-7 usually.
