Got a root canal booked for 05/02/08 - never had one done before!

Have heard they're meant to be pretty nasty, so, as you would imagine, I am rather looking forward to this...not!:p

Share your horrors and/or delights of root canal treatment with me - just so I know what I'm letting myself in for. :o:(

6 injections, 7 stitches, 2 hours in the chair

turned my horrible fear of dentists into a an absolute obsession never to visit one ever again
Literally, i've had bad toothache, it's a bit rotten... i'd rather deal with the pain!

I had 3 root canal surgeries after being knocked over by a motorbike when I was 14. (All at once)

I had to go back every 3-6months until I was 18 to have them all filed down as the nerves were still growing.

Each visit was for 3 hours to the Eastman dental institute.

it was the worst time of my life and I havent been back to a dentist for almost 8 years.

i've had 2 done, and probably need another 2 :(

injections are the worst, after that its just uncomfortable, but thats maybe because of the nightmare ex army african witch doctor dentist I went to :(

o my

had one done about 8 weeks ago, first session was donw with anaesthetic , other 2 appointments without

not painful at all , a bit wierd when they put the electric gloop into the roots but not painful

the only bad bit is having your mouth open for so long, may not be an issue for you though ;)

only thing is the tooth broke on Christmas eve and now needs more work

I had one in 2006 sometime. Had a couple of injections, the dentist drilled out the filling then began to scrape out the nerves etc.. I was clinging to the ceiling as the injections hadn't worked fully and it was like stabbing knives of molten fire, covered in acid, were sticking in my tooth.

Had a couple more injections and went to sit down while they took effect. Whole of my mouth was numb by now and I was drooling down my chin. Went back in and the dentist scraped out two of the nerves without much pain (there was a bit though), the third nerve was the infected one though and that hurt just as much as it had before even though I couldn't feel my mouth.

Never, ever, having another one, I'd rather they just ripped out the tooth with a pair of rusty pliers.

Is the tooth at the front or at the back (depending on where the tooth is will make a difference). It can be a bit uncomfortable for a couple of days after, but thats it. The pain the tooth gives you before the treatment is a hundred times worse than the pain after. I never experienced any pain during the root canal treatment itself. Injections can be a bit stingy but it depends on your dentist. My current dentist is great and I never feel even the injection.

Literally just felt like the gum was a bit bruised under where the tooth was but that was it. Within a day eating normally on it and within 4 days felt nearly back to normal.

EDIT: Seeing some of the replies in this thread I have to worry about the skill of some of the denists. If you are experiening anything more than a bit of discomfort during the procedure tell the dentist. They should stop and either freeze you up more or wait a little longer for the injection to take effect.

My fiancee is a dental nurse, and I'm registered in the same practice. Never had issues with "fear" of the dentist but I've told her "If I hear the letters RCT; I'm out the door"

Reading this thread just made my fear of these letters even worse :(

I had ten Root canals and caps/crowns fitted and the worst for me was the injections and removal of the root itself... all over 3/4 appointments.

My sister had root canal recently and was expecting the worst as she's a big wuss. Luckily she said that the injection was the worst part, and that she thought 'he was just digging around' but had actually completed the root-canal work!

I tend to ask for extra anesthetic as I can often feel some discomfort, so I would do the same, and make sure you leave it long enough for it to get throughly numb.

It's nothing.

Had one done a few months ago. One injection. Drill the tooth out. Drill into the nerve and fill it with stuff and then fill the tooth with temporary filling. Few weeks later get a proper filling.

Didn't feel a thing with injections.
