Your SSD of choice Q1 2011

I think that only applies to the free delivery as I have been here 2 years (although only just over 100 posts) and I cannot find the MM.

oh :( i thought both features for loyal members (MM+free del) had the same rules to qualify. my bad, sorry bout that. it is 90 days/250 posts for MM access

Am in the same kind of situation as the OP, although I have been considering the Crucial 64GB C300 for my upcoming SB build. I will wait for more information about Intel's new stuff though.

Oh, and one more post towards MM and free shipping :D

i was put off the c300 64gb by the low write speed and went for the 60gb 2E

Nicee aha I thought I'd ask as I was tempted to jump on the SB bandwagon as well. Decided against it in the end like you, as the cost outweighed the performance gain (especially with prices on the increase again).

Going to wait until later in the year and review the situation then. I'm really after a decent 6 core as I've been from a quad to a quad already. Don't fancy doing it again, but it's easy to get caught up in the hype ;)

Anyways, back on topic! :p

So true, to be honest I don't even need to upgrade, my GTX 470 maxes everything out I play at 1080. The higher clock speeds would have been nice with Flight Simulator but like you say with prices creeping up I'd rather spend that money elsewhere. So true about the hype!!:( Way to easy to get caught up. Yep 6 core would be nice but having said that I upgraded from a Athlon XP2600+ to my current system only just over a year ago and back at my folks place we've still got the trusty P4 3.06 mowing along!

What was this thread about again?...

Yay only 100 posts for free shipping. Sadly i think that might no apply to me as i live in Ireland (Cost me €34 for my boogie bug posted here, and it took a month with the snow :( )

But anyways back to my original plans. I think ill hold out til February judging by your opinions. If nothing has come up new by then ill get a vertex 2 ...or 2

I'm pretty impatient with my current HDD so i wont last too long waiting for the new SSD tech.

Wise choice. I think a lot of people are in the same boat and will be awaiting the new generation of SSDs eagerly.

Yeah, i can understand that reasoning. Still, isn't one of the major things with the SSD (at this early stage of its history, as it were) the reading speed? I mean, that it makes your system feel fast when it comes to loading/booting up etc.? I haven't had a decent build in years, so I wouldn't know from personal experience. It is just my understanding of things.

Write speed is meaningless on the 64 Gb C300. You wont be installing much more than Windows onto one of those, and on mine Windows 7 installed in around 8 minutes.

My SSD of choice would still be the C300 range as it is still the only 6 Gb/s range out there.

i only got it as a temp drive whilst i RMA'd my vertex LE that died, got a replacement arriving tomorrow which il sell.. then il sell this 60gb vertex 2E when the next gen arrives in a month or 2 and buy one of those :D

no chance, they will be priced highly while current generation is still available

I would have thought they already ditched the old process thus making the current line-up pricing meaningless?

£1=$1.60 again, if the pounds remains strong, I don't see why £1/GB would not be possible.

yeah i agree they probably stopped making the current line up but there is still loads of stock floating around atm, if there is still plenty when the new gen arrives that could keep the price of the new gen higher

Looking at getting an SSD for boot and contacted OCUK for recommendations, they said they would not recommend using an SSD in RAID due to the Trim support not available.

Was pondering 2 x 60gb but after that response will have to look at 120/160gb drives.

Is there much difference in speed between Intel, Crucial, OCZ?

TRIM support in RAID isn't a big deal with any current gen SSD. Firstly garbage collection routines are much more effective nowadays, so performance doesn't degrade much to begin with, and secondly the performance boost from RAID0 significantly outweighs the performance loss from lack of TRIM.

Speed wise it's not a big deal, all the current gen big-brand SSD's are so far ahead of the mechanical drive bottleneck that, RAID or not, they all feel the same to use outside of a benchmark. Just get whatever offers you the most space for the least cash.
