I was never into sport as a kid but of course had to play them at school as part of P.E. I guess it was assumed that boys automatically knew all the basic rules for football and rugby so some bits were never explained. This led to two things that took me ages to catch onto:
1. In football, whether it's a goal kick or a corner is based on which team last touched the ball. I just couldn't work it out, and thought it had something to do with whether the ball had left the pitch on the inside or outside of the penalty box line.
2. In rugby we were told to always pass the ball backwards. This I did... but by turning my back on the direction we were heading and chucking it over my shoulder. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why I kept getting the whistle blown against me.
Seems ridiculous now but if you've never been told these things what can you do?!
