Hi

I'm curious to hear from students who have network connectivity in their Halls of Residence.

Can you play whatever games you want?
Can you use P2P?
Is it throttled?
Are there any surfing restrictions (websense) ?
Can you setup your own servers?

I'm just wondering how draconian certain Uni's are in regards to their Firewall policies for private PCs in peoples rooms.

Cheers

Staffs uni..

10mb up/down half duplex
Behind proxy, when I was in games were a little impossible but much improved from what I hear..
P2P? They'll pass your details on if you get caught..
Servers, Yes but not external

Ahh we had great fun in our halls with the network. We managed to run a lot of games and games server over the network which was pretty cool as it was 1gig switches which in 2005 was impressive.

Not sure about gaming on the WAN though, assume it would work (think some people played WoW). P2P ports were blocked though but after some requesting we got Skype ports opened.

There was an odd filter that sometimes if you were looking at porn a page wouldnt load but it was like 1 in 10.

I remember once I was messing around with some server bits and mistakenly set up a rogue DHCP server on the network. Cut off my entire building and got an angry call from the IT department! Funny times.

My mate at Salford uni has to install this program on his system that ensures it has up to date AV and updates before it wil allow network access.

Steam forum users have complied a list.

Im at oxford brookes and in first year was in halls.
I got a 10 mbit connection, was amazing for games, 5 ping everywhere in the UK, was like Lanning.

P2P was throttled at 30 kb/s, ftp was throttled at 240 kb/s but ftp ssl wasnt throttled :P

Most unis have to have you running their AV, we tried some lan gaming, but it was a bit
werid, the halls are so big they use a vast range of ip ranges, I could lan with some people, but not others.

I had a ftp ssl server running for sharing "work" with people.

If I found that list earlier Im sure I would have made a more informed desicion on where
to apply / go. My mate at nottingham had a gigabit connection, but appartanly that was
horribly restricted.

Luck of the draw pretty much, even in the uni, differnt halls have differnt access ablitys.

When i was at Salford we started off with Dialup from an ISP lock-in deal (the site was over 1,200 people with 2x2Mb leased lines as a backbone) £15/month for dialup!

After that we got a bluesocket system which was 1Mb each (presumably 10Gb backbone links back to central campus) it wasn't filtered or anything but the site was one big NAT which did cause the occasional problem but was otherwise fine.

After i left they got 100Mb to each room - unrestricted unfiltered, which quickly became Cisco Clean Access - you have to install the software and stuff (unless your're running linux in which case it just works - presumably they're doing some kind of OS fingerprinting)

When my mate was at St Andrews they had 100Mb to the desktop with public IPs and unblocked ports! He (and many others) ran webservers so other people could download, great when i had access to a 100Mb JaNET connection and could swap films and stuff @ 10mb/s in 2004!

At Edinburgh University the internet is incredibly fast, but you cannot download torrents or play games - no p2p. Youtube and iplayer worked fine. Oh, you could LAN though :D

Aberdeen University's are a joke. It's all wireless and its hopelessly slow and cuts out a lot.

Both are included in halls rent.

A Question, if there was a free HTTP proxy service, just for surfing, would you pay extra each month for decent 100mb/s unfiltered service? And how much extra?

Dunno what it is now, i assume the same, but back in 2006 Newcastle was 40mb to the desktop but basically everything was blocked. After fiddling around with some 3rd party http tunnels and stuff you could get access to guildwars and WoW but steam was unusable, and impossible to get xbox live or anything. P2P was also blocked and if you looked at any mildly dodgy porn sites they blocked your internet and made you attend an interview with the university.haha this never happened to me but a few of my friends had it, was hilarious.
My flatmate tried to set up some server once, dont really know what he did but it brought down the whole halls internet for a day during exam period, that was also hilarious.lol
