Hi Folks

So I'm getting this message on my PC and being prompted to check for updates to get the latest version of Windows 10 but none are found, only an 'optional' update KB5001566.

I'm on Windows 10 version 1909 so how do I get the latest version? Apologies for the noob question here :D

As long as you haven't stopped Windows Updates under Settings then Updates underneath the 'Check for Updates' button there is normally a new build option whereby you can click 'Download and install'. If that's not working (assuming you're on an insider build) you can download the latest ISO and upgrade to it.

I haven't stopped Windows updates and I'm not on the insider build :) Perhaps I will be offered the download at some point but keep getting prompted with this message and then not being offered the actual update for Windows :D

I've got the exact same thing? My version of Windows 10 is 1909 according to the "About" option.

I have auto updates on, and when taking the update option it shows nothing pending?

The update screen tells me the following too:-

"The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page."

I had been getting ""The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page." since last May also!
I had 1909 until yesterday - 2004 / 20H2 "weren't ready yet" - but then suddenly Windows Update" - said - what are you waiting for (not really) - "20H2 is now ready for your computer" - I had to use "Windows Update Assistant" but now I am finally on 20H2 and getting updates for that. Mel

Couple of my systems are stuck on 1909 - occasionally one of them will try to update then revert - most of the time it doesn't even show anything newer as an option and trying to force it will just result in it reverting - seems due to some kind of problem that still isn't fixed with the Intel SST audio device they use.

EDIT: Apparently some people have had success by manually uninstalling the audio drivers for the device then manually putting 2004 over the top.

Mine (Lenovo Yoga 13 laptop) was stuck because of the Conexant audio driver (and reverted if an update attempted) - but now MS now say OK to update to 20H2 - and I have updated via WIA leaving the driver in - and now on 20H2.

Seems to have worked, although I'm getting some Windows Hello Pin nonsense warning from "Windows Security" which I'm no interested in, and simply don't want it, or the warning about it.

EDIT: In true Micro$oft fashion I think you get rid of the warning by setting up a pin, and then disabling it...

Had this on my work laptop as described above (on 1909) and was confused by the message as its had carte blanche to do any updates but only now aggressively popping up this build is basically end of service lol.

Yeah it is annoying - if I wanted to use a feature I'd set it up - though I actually do use pin login a fair bit but that is beside the point. I think it forces you to go through it at some point even if you then disable it. The current set of developers on the OS seem to be closed minded muppets putting it politely and ruining what should be a good OS.

Good! The pin's a PAIN.

Yes, but I'm saying before 20H2 was available and 2004 was the latest. Didn't realise quite a few people were stuck on 1909, all my devices had 2004 and 20H2 come out pretty quickly.

Mainly due to the Conexant audio driver used in loads of laptops - Conexant went bust in 2015 (apparently) and the drivers were not updated from then on - somehow MS missed this issue when designing v2004.

Well all seems OK now.

I don't know why Windows would report it was out of date, and if you asked it to update.... Nada... And then you have to go onto a website to download a Microsoft Assistant to do the update? Why isn't it all built in/friendly?

Because it's a year and a half old - it is out of date. It goes end of service in May, meaning no more security updates. Not good for people still running 1909.

Windows update is one of the things MS continue to change. It's still not brilliant but it's far better than it used to be. It's good to stay up to date.
