Well yes, if you leave it there, then you are the type of person who reads it and decides it looks fine.

If I make that mistake, then I notice it, but those who don't know any better wouldn't.

The real question is why they don't know any better.

They're are generally quite self-congratulatory. As much as I love English I don't see the point of starting grammar threads. They serve little purpose other than making the OP feel superior [I don't believe that was Raymond's intention in this case though].

And having a signature that says 'grammar nazi' is asking for holes to be picked in your posts.

I wouldn't even say it's that. With those types of mistakes you can know the difference. But if you read it back and don;t notice it. Then how can you change it.

Other mistakes can be from laziness from not checking. Especially when on mobile devices.
 
But why don't you notice it?

I don't spell check using how it sounds, I check it against the way it looks because I know it looks and is spelt a certain way. It's weird, it's probably just laziness.
 
we are not talking about big complicated words or grammar here are we? We are talking about simple words that we use daily in everyday conversations, words that has one or two syllables. What does it say about the standard of this country's education when you don't know the difference between whether & weather.

I don't know about you, but when someone writes weather instead of whether, the sentence is instantly broken and stops making sense. I must be the only one that is irate by this.

I can stand spelling mistake, I do them too. I don't care if people can't spell ridiculous, but when the word is spelt correctly, except it’s a different word all together, it changes the meaning of a sentence totally.

Is it wrong to point this out?

Is it right to see people do this more and more and accept it and do nothing?
 
Maybe it's because English isn't your first language, it really doesn't phase me that much.

I do have to re-read the word, but it doesn't take very long for my brain to figure out the correct meaning and it certainly doesn't "break" the sentence.

Who said that we don't understand the difference?

But if they sound the same how do you tell them apart when reading. Perhaps this is how people read differently. I just hear a sound in my head and as such is very hard to tell them apart, as they are pronounced the same. Therefore the sentence makes sense.
 
The one that really peeves me is when people say "Nothink" as oppose to nothing.

My little sister does it all the time and every time she does it I feel like punching her. To be fair though, she gets it from my parents. They all need to have it beaten out of them. Commoners....

did you just ignore the rest.

If they sound the same, how can you tell the difference, unless you analysis it.

You hear a word in your head and you type it, when you read it back again you hear a word. The words sound identical, so it does not register.

put the words side by side and I can instantly tell which one is which. Put them in a sentence and 95%+ of the time it just doesn't register.
