Whilst building my Core 2 Duo rig I noticed my X1800XT with the stock cooler was 'sagging' . I know the stock cooler weighs a far bit but it must have dropped 1cm or so at the PCI-E power connector corner.

I've got a Zalman VF700-AlCu that used to be on an old 6600GT. It must weigh a tenth of what the stock cooler does. I never used the ramsinks on the 6600gt as it was AGP and they didn't fit. Luckily I've just found them whilst clearing out the loft. I used to run the VF700 fan at 5v using the supplied molex adapter.

Zalman's website states the X1800XT as being compatible but the font is in in red, for reasons unknown to me.

Would the VF700 be up to the job with an X1800XT?

and could I get away with running the fan at 5v?

1cm sag! Hope it's not been cooking itself?!

If you can - please get some pics of it!

Think it would just cope with an x1800xt - tho i'm not sure how it would manage if you overclocked the card?

I certainly wouldn't think you'd be able to run the fan at 5v. I'd say full tilt would be best! :)

No pics I'm afraid :(

The core goes above 60c when playing games. Does get a bit irritating when the fan speeds up though.

The design of the stock heatsink means that it expels air directly out of the case. The VF700 doesn't. It's not likely to affect my case temps much is it?

Can't see why it would effect your case temps that much. They may increase a little but if your case has good airflow you'll be just fine!

You could always get one of those Akasa blowers and set it at 7v or put it on a fan controller. Then it would be near silent and expel any hot air generated by the card.

One here plus it's only £3.47 :D

I had a 7800GT and a Zalman VF-700Cu cooler and although it was quiet did not really cool that well at 7V and it does not exhaust the air out of the case.
