Meh, its more a case of, the zombie bits aren't particularly good, zombies waiting for guys on the roof, zombies attack camp but its a bit bog standard, zombie bites one of them and he wants to be left behind, zombie bites one of them and someone protects them and/or kills them themselves rather than let someone else do it.
It was nicely put together, but totally generic characters, with totally generic character developement, from the racist hillbilly who gets nicer, then dies, to the wife being beaten, to the leads wife having an affair with the best friend. Honestly it couldn't be more generic if it tried. Zombies aren't new, characters trying to survive has been done to death, every zombie film has an element of survival though its generally in a film and having a major and obvious goal rather than just living day to day in a longer tv series.
The problem is its put together two fairly well done subject area's, and decided thats enough and fill it with basic and rather obvious characters. Lost, meh, the entire goal, the whole main story line is non sensical rubbish, its mostly tripe but the characters, not entirely ungeneric, were still FAR more interesting. If the characters were boring with THAT main story line people wouldn't have perservered.
What The Walking Dead needs is a culling of characters, a bunch of new interesting characters added, some GREAT writing and the boring Zombie stuff won't matter so much.
Still has a lot of potential but really needs s group of superb writers to take it forwards.
