Hi All,

I've had Zone alarm for a while and have recently updated to the latest version 7.xx , and it's started killing my machine.

Every time I start the machine a go into my user, it takes about 30 minutes before I can actually use the machine to load up an application. There's not a lot of apps auto starting, just msn live, skype and a few others.

Then to load any applications takes an age. Once into the apps they work fine.

Have checked the CPU load and the only thing running is the zone alarm process vsmon.exe and thats only taking up between 5% and 40%.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? any tips on solving it.

If I shut down zone alarm then the PC speeds back up.

Cheers

Taff

Tbh I'd get rid of Zone Alarm. I just use Windows XP SP2 firewall and the one on my Router. Job done, and no lag or resource hogging applications. :)

How much memory is the program using? (Shouldn't be an issue like saying as you have 2Gb RAM).

If you disable it, and restart, is the PC super-quick whilst it's disabled?

Hi Firegod,

Thanks for the response. Don't have a router so unfortunately can't use that to help block the attacks.

I always like using a different product to protect my machine than microsft as more people tend to try to find ways of breaking through MS products than others.

As for the memory usage, thats negligible.

I've done a bit more digging and looks like theres a lot of issues with the upgrade of Zone Alarm so I think I'll do an uninstall and go back to version 6.5 that was working successfully for me.

Cheers

Ah no bother bud, I didn't realise you had no Router. Probably best to have some form of protection. Saying that though the XP firewall with SP2 is quite good, be it only for outbound stuff.

So it looks to be an issue with version 7.x then. Guess you can't do much more until another update is released. Strange how it should slow things down so much, it may just be a stupid setting that once "un-ticked" speeds up the whole thing again.

Hope the older version works ok for you anway.

Cheers.
