Cool your 4850/4870s down

Sorry if this is a bit obvious but I have done the following for my 4870...
Nice one thanks. I installed ATI Tray Tools beta then realised it wouldn't work with Vista64 because it wasn't signed. Didn't know about that ReadyDriverPlus thing. How hard is it to get that ReadyDriverPlus thing working?

It must be VERY easy because I can do it :D

Seriously it is menu driven with a self install process that works fine. When you reboot after installing it you can watch it go through the process of simulating the keystrokes needed for the unsigned drivers to work. I didn't change any options (I have a single, no multi-boot install of Vista 64) and just accepted the defaults.

Install the above first and then reboot BEFORE installing ATI Tray Tool

Usual disclaimer - If you become impotent or your hair falls out after installing the application then it really isn't my fault.

I am using Vista 64 and so need to use

readydriverplus

http://citadel.x10hosting.com/readydriverplus/

This simulates at boot up the pressing of F8 and using the unsigned driver option without any user intervention. Without this applied to Vista 64 it will not work as Vista complains about ATI Tray Tool.

This allows me to run the latest beta of Ati Tray Tools (which supports the 4x70 cards)

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=270486

then I apply the following settings (you can, of course, apply overclocking settings as well if you wish, but I have not tried that)...

this then means that the above dynamic fan / temp combo applies with my card...

Sorry if the above is not useful but it seems fine to me :)

EDIT: For me the only issue that I have noted is that I have prevented the ATI CCC placing an icon in the system tray as that seems to prevent the ATI tray tool from loading on Windows start up. Otherwise the above works well.

How did you get all the extra temp measurements in GPU-Z? I only get down to the shadercore temp, then nothing else....????

AFAIK that will only allow a MINIMUM of 50% fan usage.
Yeah, if you use fixed you can only set a minimum of 50% it seems (from some Googling)

I don't really understand what the difference is between Fixed and Dynamic looking at this tool - if it's a fixed % for 2D and 3D, then what's the difference between that a dynamic? Where do you set the dynamic speeds for various temperatures?

I still think a third party cooler is the best option here guys. The Accelero for example is almost silent with the turbo module installed on my 4850. No complaints, even if I can't stick the side panel on now. :p

BLOODY HELL! I set it to 100 and it scared the hell out of me!

Anyway 27 seems the sweet spot for my 4870, dead silent compared to my PSU and idles at 68C, 15C less than before.

This util ended up being useless for me.

Manual lets you set 2D/3D fan speed, except that they're linked (???) so whatever fan speed you set for 2D is the same for 3D too. That and the minimum fan speed you can select is 50%. Pointless.

Dynamic disables the sliders completely so you're left with the default behaviour of the card.

That is why I suggested the method above as, imo, it works well with the fan speed linkable to the temp of the GPU :)
