Best X58 motherboard?

Now down to one board and the winner is... not out yet :)

Gigabyte EX58A-UD5

Gigabyte were showing off their rev 2 version of the UD5 the other day, It should clock higher. Not sure when it's available though.

Doh, you were refering to their updated board anyway.

My point is that UD5 + watercooling costs about the same as classified + air, and given there is water involved in the former it is inevitably going to perform better with the ludicrously hot i7 chips.

Ah i see i completly read the post in the wrong context, i thought you were putting the UD5 v.s Classified both on air thought you a were little nuts:rolleyes: Makes far more sense now lol

Well then, I can't read :)

Do you know when it's expected to hit retail? A part of me wants it to be amazing, and a part hopes it doesn't render my board obselete

I have sent Gigabyte a message, asking when it's expected to hit retail. But not heard back yet sadly. I will post the reply when I get one.

I hope it's around end of August/start of September. Really want that board in my i7 build.

I am currently running a Foxconn Renaissance with a C0 920 and I am pretty sure I have taken this combo as far as I can at 3.7ghz.

I could just go out and buy a D0 and see how well it clocks but I think the motherboard may be holding me back, so I am thinking of buying a tried and tested motherboard first to see if my c0 will clock higher with less heat than the D0.

Thoughts?

Drop you chips multi in the BIOS and up the QPI until it fails.. this will give you the limit of your board...... A stable 200 QPI, for 4ghz, is a good bet and a 20 multi.

I have the P6T6 WS REVO and think its a great board... allows my 920 DO to run at a constant 21X multi so my QPI is only 193 for a stable 4ghz+ overclock

Yes, I set the multiplier to the lowest setting 12, set the ram to 800mhz set the QPI to 4800 and tried to up the bclk to as far as it would go.

178 bclk it crapped out no post.

Tried upping the voltage and hit 180 bclk which booted into windows and reported 157 bclk in CPUID.

Which was weird.

Just ordered a D0!

The D0 arrived today, lets see if the motherboard really does not matter :)

Batch: 3908A419 (if anyone is interested)

Lets the over clocking begin!

Results from the D0 overclocking....

As suspected exactly the same as the C0, this board still will not go above 180 bclk so there you go the board really does matter!

I will the EX58A-UD5 would hurry up :)

All settings on AUTO at the moment and cpu is showing up at 1.4v.

Bclk 200 + turbo.

HT "on" load temps of high 70's HT "off" high 60's

I'm sure it will go higher though.

You'll be waiting a long time for EX58A boards then. According to the message I received last night, from Gigabyte themselves, this is this the status on the EX58A boards:

"After check and confirm this GA-EX58A is not available in UK and Europe market."

and info from Slackworth who spoke to Gigabyte himself

I spoke to Gigabyte today, they've told me that the EX58A boards will not be released at the moment if at all.

and

Nope. Just said the project has been abandoned for the near future.

Shame really. Just means we don't need to worry though about something replacing the UD5.

Well it would be an amazing board, although the 24phase P55 board is coming out which also uses the SATA3 chipset.

Good job I just bought a R2E then :)

With the absence of the UD5 "A" the best boards are still the overclocking monsters:

EVGA Classified
Asus Rampage 2 Extreme

They seem very expensive to me. I have read and head that the Gigabyte UD-5 is a beastly board. And at under £200 very good.

I doubt an extra £100 would gain you massive benefits if you bought an EVGA Classified

Well coming from a mainstream x58 board which did well to get to 3.6ghz and now onto a Rampage 2 Extreme I may be ever so slightly biased but it really is worth the extra if overclocking is your goal.

Damn, that is bad news about the new X58A boards, there are guys on XS who work for Gigabyte that said these mobo's are going to be on the shelves sometime in the next month..

I also heard elsewhere that they were going to be delayed due to some issues with the SATA3 chip, or something along those lines..

Yeah, is a bit. Those two bits of information come from Gigabyte themselves. One via my email inbox, and one via Slackworth on the phone as far as I can tell.
