AMD have the same compression, it is only present in Tonga so far though.
But AMD 290 cards have a 512-Bit Memory Bus....;)
Where the 970/980 cards only have a 256-Bit Memory Bus

But the 970/980 memory is far faster and I don't know how this effects the Memory Bus..

Anything to do with Kitguru's announcement of 8gig cards inbound mate?

Press announcement!

I spoke to NVIDIA yesterday, they are saying there will be no 8GB cards and that GDDR5 is in shortage and that they can't handle 4GB 980 and 970 demand, so no 8GB's.

But that was yesterday, so I will ask again tomorrow.

But my pricing is my own promotions and it is just Inno3D, other cards will be the same, plus if NVIDIA do this the price will be very high for the priviledge and Etailors will mark up massively as 8GB cards will be even more short than 4GB versions were.

You have to remember for every one 8GB 980, NVIDIA can sell two 4GB 980's and they focus on GPU sales, not memory sales, this is why 6GB 780 was never available so well. ;)
If it comes and I hope it does they will be very expensive! :)

If you wait for the next thing, you'll wait forever.

Actually with a little effort you can research the best time to buy. Never understood why people say that.

I was under the impression that we would be getting 20nm modules as they have already begun churning them out for DDR4, it would alleviate the problem somewhat.

The memory bus remains as is but it increases the bandwidth which is what you prob meant. So roughly speaking this is what the various gpu's have:

5 GHz x 32 (256bit bus/8) = 160GB/s -hypothetical
5 GHz x 48 (384bit bus/8) = 240GB/s -7950/R9 280
5 GHz x 64 (512bit bus/8) = 320GB/s -R9 290/290X

6 GHz x 64 (384bit bus/8) = 288GB/s -GTX 780 / R9 280X

7 GHz x 32 (256bit bus/8) = 224GB/s -GTX 970/980
7 GHz x 48 (384bit bus/8) = 336GB/s -GTX 780ti

I'll defer to your experience but I'm not so sure: I know I'm not the only one holding off purchasing until cards with more memory arrive.

If it comes and I hope it does they will be very expensive! :)

If they make it stupidly expensive I'll sit out this round - I get decent performance at 4K with my 780 Ti - but ultra quality performance would be very nice and if the 8 GB cards are reasonably priced then I'll be in for two.
