It's a great game, I've clocked around 2000 hours of it on PC (being in a great, friendly outfit helps a lot). Haven't played since Feb but that's because I got a bit burned out.

Just downloaded - whats the deal with the different factions?

each faction has different weapons, vehicles etc. You chose your faction and that is the team you are on. Its large scale Teran Vs Vanu Vs New Conglomerate combat.

Suffering some teething issues today apparently. I've been looking forward to this game on PS4 for over a year now, eventually I just forgot about it and moved on, imagine my surprise when I saw the announcement on my facebook feed :D

I played this on PC for about 18 months, not hardcore but let's say... "dedicated". I was a member of an outfit (clan) and paid the monthly fee for the resources boost and perks. A few thought which might help some of the newer folks:

-solo sucks. The first thing you should do when playing is find a squad. I don't knkw what the buttons are on the ps4 but on the pc we pressed Insert to auto-join a squad. There must be a button for this. Look for squads where you'll be the last person joining. This means you'll have more team mates to help out (focus on support at first, kills come later). You get boosted rates of certs and xp for helping squad mates.

-When first starting out, I highly recommend a medic or engineer. These guys are always in demand and will help you gain certs quicker. As an engineer, drop ammo packs in choke points, repair anything that needs repairing and look for sunderers. Sunderers are the huge van things that serve as mobile spawn points. They are critical to every fight so will almost always be a target. This means they'll always need repairing so stand next to them and repair. This, together with an ammo pack strategically placed (keep an eye on this, they despawn after x seconds, to extend their deployment time you need to upgrade them) will keep certs raining in. As a medic, look for busy fights and heal / revive the hell out of people. The best is buildings where you have a bunch of team mates shooting out of doors and windows. Camp those buildings and heal / revive. Your team will love you and you'll be making tons of certs.

-certs. The currency of PS2. These babies are what makes the game what it is. You want them, your enemy wants them, your best mate wants them. Upgrades, weapons, toys, tools, all bought with certs. All classes have upgrades that you can do with one cert. Whether it's armour, speed, reload time, the first tier of these can often be bought with a single cert, and as you'll learn very quickly in PS2, everything helps. Once you have the basics, I recommend spending certs on things that will help you gain certs faster. For the medic, this is the healing gun. This heals faster and will also revive team mates with more health. Any seasoned soldier will tell you that there's nothing worse than getting revived by a level one healing gun as it only takes one shot to be killed again. Upgrading this also increases the time it takes to "overheat", so you can heal longer. For the engineer, it's the repair gun and ammo packs. As mentioned above, upgrading your ammo packs will allow them to remain on the ground longer so they provide ammo for your team and certs for you, for longer. If you want a vehicle, I suggest starting with a Sunderer. This is an armoured van which carries a load of troops but when equipped with an S-AMS it also turns in to a mobile spawn point. A well placed sunderer will annoy you with the constant cert pop ups, that's how good they are. If you place one correctly, in a good fight, it will literally rain certs on you. Remember to be an engineer and repair it as the bad guys WILL want to take it out asap. I usually drop an ammo pack near it too so anyone returning to change class (also done with a sunderer) will walk by your ammo pack and give you a few xp. I will also sit in kne of the manned guns and keep a good look out for any sneaky baddies running in. A light infantry can fly overhead with his jetpack and drop a few bricks of C4 on your battlebus and end the party very promptly, so keeo an eye out for them. ALSO! Remember that you need to deploy the sunderer for it to work. I promise I didn't spend an hour driving around trying to figure out why nobody was spawning at the damn thing

-whilst in combat, spot everything. Anyone familiar with the battlefield series will know this already, but spotting is very important and very good for certs. If someone else has a Sunderer up and a C4 Fairy flies close by, spot it so your team can kill him before he takes out the sunderer.

That's all for now folks, I'll post some more later. Hope it helps someone!

Also, add D-i-d-d-u-m-S if you need more folks to hang out with ;)

Never played PS and don't know much about this. Is it completely free to play? On the store it shows up with some Planetside subscription items as well?

It's 100% free to play. You can subscribe to their monthly deal which gives you boosted rates of resource generation and a fixed amount of Station Cash every month (Station Cash is like real cash). You can also buy things separately, for example a beginner's pack with a gun, a few camos and some other bits and bobs for £5 or whatever.

NEVER! pay full price for anything on the store. Everything is on sale eventually, and the packs are awesome. I don't know about the console version, but on PC there were also deals with other things like energy drinks, where you could enter codes and get free goodies.

Download for this isn't going too well. A 5.8 GB patch for another game started when this was at 9.8/12 GB and that game was finished in 10 minutes while this has barely moved.

Not sure why it's going so slowly but it's getting there.

I wish consoles could just max out the fibre speeds. A £3 wireless USB receiver maxed out my 76 Meg connection on PC until I got sorted with my setup but the consoles have always been really bad for this.
PS4 is 10x better than the PS3 though at least...that thing was a nightmare.
PS2 is just taking extra long though for some reason

Probably because the servers are being hammered. I've started the download and gone to do other things, the wait will kill me :D

Thanks Diddums, might as well give it a try and see if I like it then :D

It really is a great game, the problem is that it's incredibly unfriendly towards new players. The learning curve is more of a cliff, but if you get stuck ask in here or do some googling and you will find loads of people in the same boat.

Once you get the hang of it and start actually mattering in a huge fight, it's one of the most rewarding FPS games there are :)

I'm downloading this. I'm a total noob though! If anybody wants to add me to squad up then my PSN id is in my sig.

I find most games with MMO aspects are pretty hard to get into at first. But as long as you understand that and give them some time some turn out great after sinking a good few hours into it.

It seems to share some elements with Warhawk from the early PS3 days and I loved that game. It's the only game ever where I've participated in competitive tournaments etc

Mind you having not played it I could be way off but it seems like that in many ways from what I've heard.

But aye if I get into it happy to add and join up with anyone. I suspect at least 2-3 of my mates will pick it up and play fairly regular - possibly 5-6 of them but some don't game that often.

That sounds great, I run Forever Gaming which is about 50 members too, some play often, some don't, some play other games, you know how it is ;)

Would be nice to link up with some new faces too, maybe form an Outfit and dish out the pain :D
