I saw the Overclock.net thread before I purchased and thought the spikes they were talking about were something that would only be seen if you were monitoring the RPM. This is a lot more than that though.

Hi, I did search for this but didn't see anything, so apologies if this has been put to rest, but is anyone having problems running Rome 2 on 980TI? Installed about a fortnight ago, finally got round to trying ROme 2 but game doesn't work. Ive got all the up to date drivers, optimised in GeForce Experience, no downloads to be seen in steam for it, but I cant get past the initial grey splash screen with all the credits on. Task Manager says its stopped responding, and I have to kill it to come out. This worked before I installed the 980, so not being technically minded im assuming that's the problem as that's all I changed. Other steam Total War games work, eg Empire, and Medieval 2

Yup. Both sides have some issues and it makes it even more infuriating when blind sided fanboy-ism takes place
Tested my Zotac AMP and only happens if you try to fix a constant fan speed. If you leave it on auto you don't see this behaviour at least not that I have experienced.
If you fix a fan speed in afterburner at anything from 70-80-90-100% you get approx. a 250rpm fan speed fluctuation every 20-30 seconds and it is audible at these fan speeds. It's a bit like revving.
May consider returning my card and getting a refund if a fix isn't forth coming as well.

I was literally just about to buy the AMP extreme and I see this! What to do, what to do.

I wondered the same, but I have noticed it when the fan is on auto too. It isn't audible at lower fan speeds, but if have something like the Afterburner overlay running so you can see the fan RPM, the behaviour you have described still seems to happen, though I grant you it isn't necessarily audible on auto fan setting unless the auto setting is running at a faster RPM when the card goes past a certain temperature.

You're in an hardware enthusiast forum, this is THE place where people come to complain.
You'll see the same things on house appliances forums, cars, or anything remotely complex to build
In alternative there is still the Ti Hall of Fame on offer.

Noooo, they are the quiet editions. the performance editions are incredibly loud and i dont think i could do anything with 14 of them on full speed. you can hear 1 of them over all of the 14 quiet edition fans combined thats how loud they are.
I do have the top fans slowed as they are in push pull to keep the noise down but other than that its a pretty quiet system. quieter than my old h100i gt at 1200rpm.

Annoying though in the sense that years ago things like coil whine really didn't happen. Even heat sinks they've just grown in size to ludicrous proportions and more often than not are armed with 3 dissipation fans that don't exhaust the heat. 2-3 slot heat sinks are pretty much the norm these days, 2 isn't bad but 2.5-3 slots is very restricting especially if you want crossfire or sli.
The inno 3d airboss x4 basically sums up a lot of that, but its a possible replacement I'm eyeing up.
If you want to crossfire/sli with anything but stock cooler or water, you'll hit bad temps, low boost and high noise.
For that reason I respect those 3 slot solution making the best of a single card.
The Inno is great (had X3) and just as quiet, if not more, than Msi.
