Many of you may know of this problem already, but I never found the solution when I was stuck with what I thought was a bricked iPhone. So if you have an iPhone that keeps posting Error 6 on restore read on! (or skip to the end of you don't like anecdotes.)

Well been having this thing come up everytime i tried to update my phone. Can't sync can't restore, pretty much bricked.

Went through the normal applecare channels (the applestore confirmed it was bricked), got on a train to Sheffield swapped my phone out came home and WHAT DO YOU KNOW error 6 again!

Tried it on lots of different PCs and the same thing happened.

Getting almost to the point of utmost despair I decided to try it out on a Win XP virtual machine (as all the PCs I had tried were vista) and BANG! it worked PERFECTLY!

At this point I'm sure the neighbours could hear my cursing Apple Mobile Device Drivers. So I tried syncing the iPhone back on my vista machine and it would mess up saying that the disk couldn't be written to. I thought about it for a minute and considered the common denominator between all the PCs I tried and the virtual pc and it hit me. ZONEALARM!

I turned it off and now everything works fine. So moral of the story: zonealarm sucks more than I knew it did. Make sure you turn it off before doing any syncing jobs or just get rid of it altogether.

Just a point of note: due to the excessive number of times I had tried to restore my previous iPhone Zonealarm must have caused some major corruption to the unit as when the genius at the Applestore tried to restore it using an XP machine and an OSX machine it would fail instantly. Sorry for the long story and more so if you already knew this, but I hope this spec of info will help those suffering from the problem who didn't.

*THANK YOU* Your post was very helpful, I'm glad you had a long story, it was great to read it and for it to work! I just made an account to show my appreciation!

Zonealarm has been awful for awhile now. No idea why people would try and use it.
