Check the AV connection, i think 4 lights means its loose or faulty. Hopefully the console is fine though.

Way to not read the post. He has an original Xbox, not an Xbox 360.

EEPROM Error. Refer to the below.

SYMPTOMS
This article describes how to troubleshoot the problem when an indicator light is flashing red.

CAUSE
An indicator light that is flashing red indicates that there is an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) error and that Xbox cannot start.

EEPROM is a memory device that does not lose the information programmed to it when power is lost. This is where items such as language setting, video modes, audio modes, and game region are stored.

THINGS TO TRY
1. Remove all discs from the Xbox console.
2. Turn off the Xbox console and leave it off for thirty seconds.
3. Carefully read the Xbox instructional manual that came with the Xboxvideo game system for instructions about to use and how to position the Xboxconsole to avoid overheating and other problems.
a. Make sure the Xbox console is not located near a heat source. Heat sources can include TVs, computers, monitors, and other electrical devices.
b. Make sure the vents are not blocked. There are vents on the left and right side, and on the rear of the Xbox console. Make sure each vent has at least six inches of clearance and space for air to circulate. If the Xbox is inside a cabinet, move it to see if this prevents heat problems.
4. After the Xbox console is set, turn it back on and make surethat you see a steady green indicator light on the front.
5. If the console continues to flash a red light, the console may need repair by Microsoft.

Way to not be a **** about it, only trying to help

But it's just like someone saying 'I've got a really bad headache today' and you saying 'I find that stretching my legs stops me getting calf strains'. It sounds like you don't even care enough to listen to the question...

Simple mistake to make though with all this xbox 360 flashing going around, a simple "He mean's the first xbox not the xbox 360 buddy" would have been nice.

Lol i read the thing's to try list and basicaly it just says turn it off, leave it....turn it back on, problem still there?! send it to MS. Made me chuckle, sorry its just really early for me ha!

OK, back to the ORIGINAL xbox problem... its overheating, one of the fans isn't working. Hopefully its something i can fix myself. Starts off ok then after about 10mins it dies.

Just bought it for the kids for something to play in their room.

Before i go searching the net, does anyone know of any good guides to take the original xboxes apart?

There's not really much to them mate. There's 6 screws on the bottom (4 under the rubber feet, 2 under labels) and you'll need a torx T10 bit to take them out. If you've got a selection of flathead screwdrivers though, one may fit and do the job without tearing the bolt apart.

When you've undone the 6 screws and got the lid off, you'll need a torx T8 bit to undo 3 more screws to take the hard drive and DVD drive out and then from there it's straightforward. They're dead simple to work with.

Thanks, youtube had some vid's. Took it apart, found a bit of plastic jaming the fan.. Removed and all fine again.. Prev seller must have known and probably reason for his sale.. Bought it off the bay. Only paid $50 for it inc 4 official controllers and two games, as a knock about toy for my young kids to play in their room.

Just annoyed that i'd already left him good feedback  Cos i turned it on and it worked fine.

Anyway problem solved. Thanks
