I recently bought a Fractal Design Define R2 case to kick start my new quieter build. This is a great quiet case (in my limited experience) but for 1 niggle. The hum from 7200rpm HDD vibration was much louder than in my previous case. This hum travelled through the case feet, through the table, through the floor and could be heard in the room below. Never since I used a G4 Cube had I heard such humming.

I since read up on HDD vibration isolation to find that grommets make very little difference. I realised the problem was the vibrating metal screw which ran through the centre of the grommet to hold the HDD in place. My solution lay in the packaging of 2 extra Fractal design 120mm fans I'd purchased. Armed with my secret weapon I created my PACMAN Mod (Pointless.Additions.Combined.Make.Awsome.Noisereducer)

for this mod I used 3 things:

1.A 3.5” bay from a Fractal design Define R2 case complete with grommets
2.A 3.5” Hard drive
3.Anti vibration fan mounts supplied with my extra 120mm fans

This was the procedure:

Step 1 – Removed the grommets from 3.5” bay

Step2 – Inserted the fan mounts into the grommets to make 4 PACMAN devices

Step3 – Screwed the PACMANs into the attachment holes on the HDD

Step4 – Placed the HDD on its tray and tweaked the PACMANS into their slots

I feel a bit cheeky calling this a mod since its so easy but it really does make a great difference to my humming pc.
