GTX 480 to GTX 570, upgrade or not?

Going from a GTX 480 to GTX 570, would it be considered as an up grade or a downgrade?

My Zotac GTX 480 has died and the retailer has offered me a GTX 570 as replacement (they do not have any Zotac 480's in stock). I currently game @ 1920x1200 but my 2560x1600 monitor should be here on Wednesday.

Is the GTX 570 an upgrade over the 480? or will it be a downgrade for me?
 
At high resolution, the gtx 480 starts to pull away from the gtx 570, due to the larger memory on the 480. Personally, it would be a downgrade in performance.
 
I thought as much.

I have asked them to replace with a GTX 480 with similar or better warranty period card. Or replace with something better.

The customer services guy is insisting that it's an upgrade. I think I'll stand my ground here.

It's a big upgrade in terms of heat output and noise, trust me. Not in performance though. They're about level and the 480 will do slightly better at very high resolutions.

I did the same change as the noise and temps was getting a bit much for me personally. With the 480 the fan and temps increased concurrently whereas this 570 (oc'd as well) will increase to like 76c with 56% fan. So roughly a 20% fan reduction and less heat output at the cost of less memory.

If you're happy with temps, fan speed and heat output, don't bother mate.

Depends on the extra cost. It worked out an extra 30 quid to change after selling my 480. If it was anymore I would have just bought a third party cooler for it.
 
well, I'm not sure because of the res I play at... 1920x1080. Then again, the 480 is a little cheaper 249.99 vs 279.99... but on the other hand, I'd likely have to get a NEW PSU with the 480, and obviously it runs hotter too.
 
I would take the 570 GTX

It a better card due to lower noise & heat output and still gives about the same performance as a 480 gtx

Plus they both sell for about the same price..

well this is true but also kind of misleading. at OP's resolution which he states, gtx570 is definitely an upgrade from 480 because you will get virtually the same performance but with much less noise, heat and power. if your are being offered a 570 or a 480, then you'd be crazy not to take the 570.

Definitely get the 570. You should really be able to get it cheaper than that. OCUK were doing 5% off yesterday, there will be other deals about too. The 570 is available for £250/£260 if you shop around, don't buy a 480 at that price.

And that's not even taking into account your PSU. The 570 is newer, quieter, cooler, uses less elec etc, get a good deal and buy it :)
 
So many people not reading OP's first post in details...he is not asking if he should upgrade from a GTX480 to a GTX570...he's asking if he should accept a GTX570 as a RMA replacement for the GTX480!

GTX570 is pretty much on par with GTX480 at 1920 res or lower, but it is lower power consumption, and the Vapor Chamber cooler is much quieter than GTX480's reference cooler! So I would consider it as "sidegrade", but with lower power consumption, better cooling, lower temp, lower noise...and possibly longer life-span (since it run at lower temp than the GTX480).

GTX570 is definitely a decent RMA replacement for the GTX480.
