Gigabyte P67a-ud7 sli and pci-e audio, any issues?

Hi guys,

I have just bought the P67A-UD7 as its the only P67 mobo which will do x16 on the pci-e slots.

but i have just had a nasty thought :( if i plug my X-FI PCI-e sound card into one of the remaining PCI-e slots will the other PCI-e slot drop to x8?

If thats the case i may have to look into selling my X-Fi and going with a PCI based sound card.

No - because the way that Gigabyte have used the NF200 chip is different to how other vendors have used it. So as you say you get full x16 in the two dedicated x16 slots. The other slot is only x8 and that PCi-e lane is shared with the SATA and USB ports as well as the PCI slots. Long and the short of it is you can run dual card at x16 and still have a sound card in a PCi-e slot.

The slots are marked on your board so make sure you do place the sound card in the correct slot.

Glad to hear it.

Shame the x1 slot at the top is blocked off by the heatsink arrangement. Im hoping ek will come out with a suitable waterblock for the chipset even if it doesnt get that hot on the P67's at least im hoping it will allow me to use the top slot.

Erm i have just setup the mobo and my gtx 580's in sli and it would seem that the top slot card is running at 16x but the 2nd is running at 8x.

I will report back in a min if this is due to populating the 3rd PCIe slot with my sound card :(

Gaming at 2560x1600 i really do need the bandwidth.

As soon as i take out the X-FI both PCIe Slots are running at 16x

But with the X-FI in place the second slot drops to 8x

B@gger let me see if I can find a fix for this. I know that the NF200 lanes work differently with the UD7 boards. There should be a way. I will pull out a PCI-e sound card from a system on Monday do not have one here with me now. But testing with a third 580GTX I get the same result as you. :(
 
I thought only certain PCIe ports were ont he nf200?

Silly question but have you got them on the correct ports?

As I read it if you have 2 cards in the PCIe it will be x16. If you add more it steps down as all the PCIe go through the nf200 controller. But communication between the cards will be x16. Hope that makes sense.

Hi matthab, thats a different board mate, thats specifially the P55 + NF200

I believe its slightly different on the P67 + NF200 but from what i am seeing first hand its not :(

To be honest there isnt any other way to fit in 2 x gtx 580's and a PCI-e sound card. Have just tried it with a new Asus Xonar Xense and its the same result.

1Day have you seen any news on the leaked beta bios F8x

I have my O/C sat stable at 4.8ghz using 1.368v but anything above that goes downhill very fast.
 
The beta bios F8x was produced to allow people to try for the x59 multi. The best bios for high overclocking and benching is the F7e

I am busy with some family stuff - feeding the masses so to speak but will have a quick check on the way the NF200 chip works with the UD7 board.

I have only had this setup 1 day lol not expecting to iron issues out with what little play time i have had on it lol.

Easier for me to quote Steven.

On the P55 chipset boards, the NF200 chip allowed full 16x SLI for both video cards. This same technology was used on many boards even before P55. With a PCH there is no IOH/Northbridge so SLI has to be integrated separately, just like on P55 platform. The NVIDIA NF200 chip supports 32 PCI-E 2.5GT/s lanes.

Here is how it works, NF200 takes the native 8 lane 5GT/s bus and doubles the bandwidth to 16x5GT/s so you would have 32 lanes of 2.5GT/S PCI-E bus for 16x SLI. Do not be fooled it doesn’t add PCI-E lanes; instead it splits the ones already present and adds bandwidth. It is really great at consolidating and making sure the proper devices are fed full bandwidth. Although we have 32 lanes of PCI-E bandwidth GIGABYTE says the board only supports 3-way SLI. This is most likely because 4-way SLI would be 8x each card and performance would take a hit. This board also supports CrossFireX which is the ATI/AMD equivalent for SLI technology.


On this board ALL the PCI-E lanes from the processor are fed directly into the NF200. On many X58 boards and P55 boards, only a portion of the PCI-E lanes are fed to the NF200, the reason is that USB3 and SATA6G work off the high speed PCI-E bus, but this board is one of the few exceptions. The new P67 PCH connects to all of these devices through a secondary PCI-E bus, that has its own clock generator, and its own set of 8 PCI-E switches. The PCH then communicates to the CPU through a high speed 20GB/s DMI interface. The NF200 connects to the 4 PCI-E slots through 2 switches.


Many people have mixed views of the benefits of 16x/16x vs 16x/8x SLI, regardless the NF200 is needed for proper SLI on LGA 1155 motherboard. This motherboard will probably perform exceptionally at SLI with the NF200 because all the PCI-E lanes from the processor are used solely for the PCI-E slots.

This board has two PCI-E clock generators, both are the same model: ISC9DB403DGLF. These clock gens’ spec says they put out a clock between 50-100 MHz. They are used specifically for PCI-E. I will cover the purpose of the second clock generator a little later in the PCH section. Along with clock generators the board has two PCI-E switches for SLI; if a 3rd card is inserted then one video card goes down from 16x to 8x. This board utilizes two ASMT PCI-E switches to switch a native NF200 16x,16x configurations to 8x on each PCI-E port for SLI.

Now the bold bit is the important bit. I have always understood that to be only when graphic cards are inserted. But it seems that it is any card that is inserted. Which is a pity.


Now from a personal observation. I am not sure that the audio benefit is worth dropping down the Sli x16 by two to x16 + x8. It is irritating but understandable when you realise the slot is automatically detecting an additional card.
 
Hey 1Day many thanks for that, yes it is a pity the way they have implemented it. Especially as the card is only x1 :grrrrr:

If only that poxy gigabyte heatsink wasnt so large blocking that x1 port at the top of the board all would be peachy.

I have 2 options really,

1: hope EK or someonelse for that matter does a decent waterblock for the board (not that it needs it, heatwise that is)

2: wait for a better board to come out that meets my needs and flog this one on.

Reminds me i need to register it with Gigabyte for the board replacement program

There is another option of course. Use a PCi x1 riser.

Hey 1Day, i dont think that would clear the heatsink on the board.

Also the Asus Xonar Xense is a full height card :(

Will just see what new motherboards come out in the future :)
