In my new system I am looking at fitting the ASrock Extreme 4 gen3 board.

I want some serious power graphics wise but was thinking would I be wise to fit a current 580 or fit a decent card for now (560Ti) and wait until the PCI 3.0 cards are released to get a whopper (for want of a better word).

Or, am I being really stupid and will today's cards run at full throttle on pci 3.0

I'm a tad confused.

Todays cards will run fine on PCI 3.0, but honestly when PCI 3.0 is out I think the cards will gain a lot of performance.

I'd fit a 580, buying lower end and waiting isn't usually the way to go, in my opinion.

On boards such as the Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 the PCI-E 3.0 slots only run as PCI-E 2.0 slots with a Sandy Bridge processor.

They don't operate as PCI-E 3.0 until an Ivy Bridge processor is fitted.

Basically no Ivy Bridge no PCI-E 3.0.

Oh no I realise that. But I would be fitting an ivybridge as well.

Well, that depends on benchmarks.

unless you upgrade your montior to one with 2560x1440/2560x1600 res the 580 will be overkill, the 560ti should be able handle most games at 1600 x 1200 with high details.

Someone said to me to wait for the 28nm cards. How long will I have to wait? Who knows. I just bought a 580 last week.
