Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

For you Windows 7 lovers.

Clicked on task manger that was pined to an old profile and it fired up the old taskmanger

I'm sure it's pulling that in from the old install. I was amused

Both task managers are still in this build, but the new one is called TM.exe which is why your old shortcut launches the original one.

a question

for some reason when i install this on a second hard drive (instead of on the same hard drive but on a different partition) i dont get the option at start up between windows 7 or windows 8 anybody got an idea how i can fix this?

I too have a question!

My laptop has W7 taking up all of the HDD, with ubuntu installled inside windows (if that's right? I only installed is yesterday!). I have 100gb of spare space, if I install W8, will it just take up that empty space?

I tried the 'shrink partition' feature, but it only gives me 10gb, and then fails when I try and do it.

Thanks for any help.:)

If you boot from a Win 8 disc or USB stick then you can select what partition to install Win 8 on. But if you run the Win 8 setup from within Windows then I didn't see any way to select a partition (it would just install over your current Windows install).

Use this to create a partition.

It's free and actually works (Windows Disk Manager just locks up for me). Then you can see how to create a new partition in this vid. It's a old vid with a older version of the software, but exact same process.

Without reading the whole thread, is their any fix or workaround for the language/location problem stopping us from using some apps? just tried the Xbox Companion one but it wasn't playing ball!

As a side note, been playing and looking around for the past couple of hours - really like, will just take some time to learn all the new shortcuts and things. Going to see if I can get my laptops special keys working later on! (I doubt Sony will release actual Windows 8 drivers for my model).

You have to run \sources\setup.exe if you want to install it from within windows 7. Its been mentioned previously in the thread. I used that method, and I put it where I wanted it to go.

From what I've been reading and watching on the tube the interface in windows 8 is really not multi-monitor friendly at all imo, for example it won't even remember app or window placement (something which win xp did natively)
I haven't had any problems. The Charm bar is definitely awkward at first but there's a small invisible barrier at the bottom right of the screen to catch the mouse, which you can then move up to click on the icons; it also allows you to confidently hit Aero Peek, as your cursor doesn't move onto the next screen. It's definitely not perfect but it's not a disaster either.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....................................oooooooooooHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh !!!!

:D

Lol i tried it anyway to see if it actually works... and it does:

Getting rid of it though.

And the Win 8 Smart Screen Filter (the new built-in Anti-Virus) will pop up a warning message when you try to install this, but you can run it anyway.

Quite like the look of that^

Yeah but it's more of a hack than anything. Did you remap your windows key also ?

Well the software is actually for Win 7, it adds more functionality to the existing 7 Start menu and just happens to also work on 8. It's like a Start menu on steroids. Didn't remap the Windows key but gotten rid of it already.

Thanks, I'll give that a go. :)

The new Start is much better. I've pinned stuff to it including folders, and organised each section into named groups. It's quicker too because before you had to do two clicks to get to the All Programs list within the Start menu, but now i can fit loads of stuff on the Metro Start screen. One less click.

Or if you just go to Search on the Charms bar (or Win key + F) then it will list all your installed programs as well. How is all this not better? … oh yeah, people are scared of change
