OK so I took the first photo and layered the two PCB's on top of each other. I resized the photo's so the PCI connector was the same size and voila, the GPU mounting holes line up. Now the chip height may be different, so some some spacers may need to be made, but in principle the 7970 Arctic Accelero will fit on the new Hawaii AMD reference boards :)

There is no way I am going back to a centrifugal style fan !

In principle it will fit, but I imagine there is going to be exposed parts of the 290 core not getting full contact with the 7970 AC plate.

The other point of interest is, has the metal shim around the gpu core been removed for the 290 series(it's hard to tell from the pics)?

If yes, then my 5870 Extreme coolers look as if they have even more life left in them-5870>6950>7950(sat on a DD with the help of a brass shim)>290 series???

Not that I'm planning on going the 290 route.

Wooaaarr... hang on a minute :)

The Hawaii card there is the R9 280X, apparently just a 7970. you can see that with the Memory IC's, like the 79## it has 12, 12 x 32Bit = 384Bit, the R9 290X has 16, 16x 32Bit = 512Bit.

Now, if you look that the Chip on that there R8 280X its a different shape to Tahiti, Its the same size, but slightly rectangular, Tahiti is square.

Seems even Tahiti got a redesign of some sort, or do my eye's deceive me? :)

Edit scratch that ^^ i missed the IC's missing on the right, still Hawaii looks no bigger than Tahiti, its perhaps slightly longer giving it a slight rectangular shape.

I installed the accelero turbo 2 on my GTX 480 and frankly it was the most stressful thing ive done. the card was bent so much i personally wouldnt want to go through that ever again! i'd rather buy a Direct CU or twin frozer or whatever cooler that OEMs use (not the standard card one, that thing sucks)

I found it fine to fit, and the performance is awesome.

I spy some Xfire bridge connectors, i am doubtful of this being a 290 pcb.

I was really interested in seeing this because I intend to watercool my next card and was seeing if any current blocks would fit. Too much to hope for :(

It was probably an early engineering sample, this time minus the bridges:
