OK, just pulled the trigger and ordered a 970 to replace my 570. Gone for the MSI one as it's supposed to be very quiet, and my PC is a near silent build.

Getting a bit concerned as I've just read in the 970 owners thread about one of these cards having coil whine. I have to admit, this noise drives me nuts! :)

So, gtx 970 owners - who has coil whine, and who doesn't? Those of you with the MSI card especially - any coil whine that you've noticed?

Many thanks for feedback on this issue.

NB. I do have a quality power supply, rated well, well above what even two of these cards would draw in my system.

No coil whine on my MSI.

I saw a roundup review of 3 970's and they mentioned the evga having electrical 'noise'. I think i was guru3d.

*edit* it was bit-tech.net and they said the Evga made an irritating buzzing sound under load.

I was set on the Evga up to reading that.

From what I know all cards have it, just some louder than others. I noticed it on a Gigabyte G1 when my head was next to the card and it was clocked to well over 1600MHz core, was quiet though and nothing considered as wrong. Some are just louder than others, then you get cards where it's a clear fault as very loud and noticable but that is rare.

Power supplies do seem to help reduce it as well too.
 
Different cards, but when I first upgraded to a pair of 780tis I had shocking buzzing/ coil whine noises. I was on a good psu I thought (xfx) but I was pushing the limits and upgraded to a leadex 1000w. Totally quiet ever since, so it sometimes is a psu issue.

I noticed coil whine on my Gigabyte 970 but only once during 3d mark Ice Storm which runs at like 4000fps or something.
There's been no other instance of coil whine on my card.

Using a Corsair AX850 psu

Yeah, weird thing is I've had this Gainward Phantom 570 for 3-4 years and never had a single issue with coil whine. But...

Just downloaded the trial edition of 3DMark and did actually notice some slight whine on scenes where it's showing 500+ fps. On the slower scenes - more typical in games - it's absolutely silent.

Fingers crossed that the MSI is as quiet as my current card (hopefully even quieter.) Unfortunately I have to wait until Saturday to find out. :(

It is amazingly quiet when my MSI GTX970 core is OC'd to 1502MHz @ 70% Fan speed and is hardly audible. :D

Highest temp was 54c in Firestrike :)
 
Cause: poor QA and no reference design.
Test your card with Furmark using post-fx and extreme burn-in for a good while. Nothing hits a GPU harder, if you have the problem, it will show for sure. It will also 'kill' your video card if it has temperature or stability issues. Problems with this test means RMA 99%. GPU reviews are based on performance tests that don't measure resilience. Only Black Edition hardware from Gigabyte have a 'resilience' certificate
