re. thread title, I recommened:

Windows Classic
XPize (version 4.51, don't like the newer ones)
Rhodium XP
Black Mesa

These are the four I use, tend to use one for a month or two then change (currently Classic is my preference).

Whats that bit of software you get again so you can use any visual style/theme for windows.

You could always try the Black Royale theme. It's officially signed by MS so no uxtheme patcher needed or anything.

I've been using the Black Zune theme, but I hate the orange start button. So this will be a welcome change.

I have theme i want to use, but dont want to use programs like WindowBlinds.
How do i use this UXTheme patcher? I ran it, but my theme doesn't work, what am i doing wrong?

you need to reboot after running the patcher. also the patcher won't work if you leave your xp cd in the drive...

then you just unzip your theme into

c:\window\resources\themes

and double click on the .msstyles file to apply it (or use the standard display properties, appearance tab)

edit: themes i used to use on xp were...

area04
hmmxp
xpmc
gui.relax

that's about all i can remember. i've deleted them all since installing vista.

I tried xpize last night - doesnt work on xp64 and couldn't find this tango program.
But its ok now, i have my black desktop - find it so much easier to look at

there are no 64bit freeware resource patchers that support commandline usage (none as good as reshacker anyway), so 64bit won't be supported anytime soon :/
