Nice, I hope they put really cutting edge tech in it so it's more than a bit 'meh'.

It certainly sounds like they are doing! The Nexus series are the Android phones that everyone would ideally want to own.

Has this not been known for months now?

Simulatorman loves his Nexus phones, he probably just wanted to get the 'official' thread made for it. It's fine as it can be renamed if it isn't called the Prime.

Also, there hasn't been mention of a release date until now.

I know, as do I ;)

No problem with that :), but it needs to be "***The Official Nexus Prime Thread***" :p

I was talking more about the specs and when it would be released. It was pretty obvious they would be releasing it with ice cream sandwich at the presentation and all.

I hope it is indeed named prime, optimus prime ***! :o :D

If this wasn't going to be made, I would be going with the GS 2, however I can wait for this as it looks like a beast of a mobile, with google support and an amazing screen.

I personally really like the look of it and the nexus S, futuristic look to it IMO, but of course there will be people who will say it looks cheap, made out of plastic and is too light :p

Although would have preferred it to be no more than 4.3" (if it is true that it will be 4.5").

^ The "Nexus Prime" name was thrown around due to LG making it. (i.e. the ultimate LG optimus phone)

No point speculating until Google announce something.

If it's 4.5'' like Engadget are reporting, I'm not best pleased...phones can't keep getting bigger and bigger :(

Does anybody know a likely release date? I'm due an upgrade on Monday but don't know whether to get a galaxy S2 or wait for this phone to be officially announced/released.

^^^ rumours are October sometime

Like the specs but I don't like the look of it, same as the Nexus S which isn't exactly a good looking phone.

I'd very surprised if they didn't make the new Nexus look any different from the S. Expect a new design.

Remember that 4.5" @ 16:9 ratio isn't quite as bad as 4.5" @ 10:6. If you get rid of capacitive/hardware buttons, the phone size might not increase at all from 4".

Will be interesting to see how this turns out.... not sure why the BGR page used a photo of what is without doubt a Nexus S though! Nexus One was great, Nexus S was brilliant (if a little under-specced compared to the dual-core beasts).

Given my fruit-themed computer/tablet transition, I'm waiting with bated breath, but I can't do without the flexibility of good old Android and gear like Google Nav and Maps.

4.5" @ 16:9 will still be wider than 4.3" @ ~16:9.5. Width is the problem.

Current 480*800 res phones are 16:9.5 or thereabouts.

Well I thought I'd work it out.

16:9 4.5" screen : 3.92" x 2.21" = 99.6mm x 56.0mm
10:6 4" screen : 3.43" x 2.06" = 87.1mm x 52.3mm

Easily fitted in the Galaxy S frame with plenty of space to spare lengthwise and some in terms of width.

SGS: 122.4mm x 64.2mm x 9.9mm

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

4.2" 16:9 with dimensions 125 x 63 x 8.7 mm

So in theory a 4.5" 16:9 screened phoned will be wider than 63mm - I'd say at least 66mm+ which tbh isn't that much wider than an SGS2. All depends if they fit a gigantic bezel or not.

EDIT : RUMOURS are it may be 4.65" too :D

I think mobile phones will just keep getting bigger screens, well until you can't physically hold it in one hand. The fact can you put it in your pocket has long gone out of the window. Top end droids... who in their right mind puts a £450 mobile in a jean pocket and sit on it. ;-)

Am I right in thinking 4.0 will be a very significant release because it's the same version of Android for phones, tablets and Google TV (if it even exists in the UK)?
