New Build - having Issues

Hi all,

Just built a new machine comprising of:-

Intel 5960X
Asus x99 deluxe
32Gb of Kingston hyper x Ram 3000Mghz 4x8 kit
Corsair 860AXi psu
etc

Building this machine for somebody else so need to resolve the issues which are:-

I am unable to set the ram timings manually using 100 strap - will not boot with error code bd or b6?

If I set xmp to on the ram runs at expected speed - but turbo mode for cpu is disabled and for some weird reason the multiplier is set to 32 which equals 4000Mghz or 4 Gb for the chip speed - it also sets the voltage to 1.2v.

This is not what I want. I would have thought that the ram would have worked at proper speed and timings on the 100 strap as 30x100 = 3000Mghz and the cpu should be happy with a ratio of 30x100 which gives default speed unclocked of 3000Mghz too or 3Gb.

Where am I going wrong here - or do I have a problem with mobo/ram or compatibility? I have upgraded the boards bios to latest 2001 so that should be ok.

I don't have any of these problems with my own RIVE X99 setup - albeit using 3200 Gskill ram on that machine.

Anybody know how to solve these issues - or where I am going wrong?
Your help would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention that if I set the ram to 2666 speed it works ok on 100 strap, but no higher - weird or what?

That ram has a sort of plug and play feature built into, in other words it automatically sets speed, timing and voltage of the rated spec without you even having to select an XMP Profile.

Not quite that simple - yes it has jedec settings and xmp, but does not explain my problem. Thanks anyway.

Don't think X99 systems like to run over 2666 using 100 strap, my pc uses 125 to run @3000. It also disables turbo mode and sets the core multiplier to 30. I tried turning turbo back on but it was boosting to 4.6Ghz:eek: My RAM uses 1.35V @3000. Also proper speed for X99 = 2133, anything over that is overclocking. The XMP profile will auto config the overclock for you.

Thanks for your comments. Trouble is that my other system with rampage extreme and 3200 mem kit runs just fine on 100 strap and I have full control over turbo etc.

This board and ram combination will only run the memory at the correct 3000 if I enable Xmp which as I say disables turbo mode, and I am unable to turn turbo mode on. Seems to me there is something wrong somewhere as this should not be this way.

Anybody else got any input on this problem?

For 3000mhz you cant run 100 strap. Its not a native memory multiplier on X99 on this strap. For 3000mhz you must run 125 strap.

From this then set multi for your desired speed and adjust Vcore accordingly. 1.2 is usually fine for 4ghz OC.

You dont want to OC just set the ratio you require for both core and cache. 24 being stock.

Set Cache 1.25, SA 1.15 or so and test.

Your 3200mhz is a native multi on 100 strap so 125 strap then not needed.

Thanks Ian,

Thought I was misunderstanding straps - will try working from your suggestions.Hope you are well mate.
