Well my Mums partner is a big dark rum fan. Loves stuff from Guatemala but I bought him this for Christmas and he absolutely loves it -

Havana Club 7 year a good shout - on offer (very small discount admittedly!) at Waitrose at the moment.

Kraken is pretty good despite it being so readily available.

If it's just going to get mixed with coke then anything will do. Kraken is okay but it's specifically a spiced rum rather than a normal dark rum such as Lambs Navy rum or OVD.
Really like that and Anejo Reserva. Have tried the Kraken and that does taste pretty good too.

Try Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva which is Venezuelan.

Kraken is good with ginger beer too.

My default Rum is always Lamb's Navy rum. It's cheap and cheerful but surprisingly nice.

Ron Zacapa is one of my favourites, but not as a mixer - neat only. That said the bottle I have has lasted me 3 years so far! 
It is delicious but I'm not a big drinker and have it from time to time. (I drink on average once a month if that).
