Hi Guys

Well I've had a 40" LED tv from richer sounds for 7 years + it's been excellent but as we are moving in the next few weeks/months and spend lots of time watching tv the wife has asked me to look for a new TV (I know thats unheard of right :D) so I've been looking at 55" TVs and the Panasonic Viera is looking like the front runner (not set on a model as yet)

I have between £700 and £1000 budget so the wife is giving me full range to buy as I see fit..

Whats the best unit out there for this price range, and what should I be looking out for. Guy round the corner has a Panasonic and Sky Q and it looks amazing compared to mine...

I have these in mind

Thanks in advance..

Buy this

but from John Lewis

John Lewis will price match through online form called Never Knowingly Missold or something like that at the bottom of their website. Crampton and Moore are the cheapest currently for that tv.

The reason why you want to buy from John Lewis is they will price match brick and mortar stores with websites, they also give free 5 year warranty on any tv and their customer service is amazing. Unlike other stores who will fob you off to manufacturer, etc John Lewis will take care of you. Do a quick search and you will see the horror stories of buying from Currys, etc where they promise one thing but do another.

Richer sounds are a good retailer, however unsure of how their warranty works or if they price match. I stick with John Lewis as it's a more reputable brand and never had any issues with them. People tend to think they are expensive but the price match takes this out of the equation.

at your budget there aren't many decent options tbh.

You could always save a bit of cash and buy a Hisense. They are a decent budget manufacturer. Out the box their sets do need tweaking to get the best out of them whereas more established brands tend to have better out the box settings.

If you know how to tweak or don't care about getting he absolute best PQ for your money then you could save yourself by buying Hisense.

65" for £799

55" for £529

don't get caught up too much about HDR unless your planning on buying 4K HDR blu rays at £30+ a pop or have 4K netflix/prime.

Hisense sponsored the Euros and their high end TV's (better than the models I've linked to) have FALD technology which gives brilliant PQ and really nice blacks for LCD's.

Pretty sure I've heard of price matching not being accepted in situations where there is a disparity in warranty i.e. Crampton & Moore don't include any warranty, it's £80 more for 5 years.

Richer sounds do price match, personally couldn't recommend them enough. They are real AV specialists

I've never had issues when I had both my plasmas price matched. Neither of the competitors offered longer than normal warranties.

The only time their is issues is if the retailer doesn't have any in stock at the moment or doesn't have a store near one of their stores or the store your inside trying to get a price match.

The online form is the best way as then they don't look at specific stores near them.

For example online I could get them to price match x retailer, I go into Glasgow store and get them to price match the same retailer they will state that retailer doesn't have a store in Scotland never mind within driving distance. So good luck buying from them in store.

Also fill out the form a few times during the day. 1 person might reject it and another accept it. I noticed this a lot on avforums. I got accepted other didn't and I got rejected and others didn't so I kept trying until it was accepted.

If I bumped to £1,200.00 would that help?

All your going to get is either a bigger panel or slightly better quality panel.

The best TV you can buy right now would either be a FALD LCD or OLED.

4K OLED's aren't cheap your talking about tripling that £1200 ;)

FALD LCD's also aren't cheap your talking around £3K for a samsung 65"

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/ue65js9500-201502234012.htm

or around £1.5-£2K for a Hisense with FALD tech.

The problem is most people wouldn't notice the difference between a 55" Hisense and a Samsung 6 Series (what has been suggested). They are better but only slightly but your paying double the money.

Law of diminishing returns. The more you put in the less of an improvement your going to get. It's best to buy cheaper IMO and more regularly than buy more expensive and less regularly.

My last 5 tv's have been

49" 4k Hisense - £350
55" 1080p top of the range Sony - £450
50" 1080p Panny Plasma (best TV I've owned) - £799/£899 can't remember
51" 1080p Sammy Plasma - £649 (second best TV I've owned)
42" 1080p Panny plasma - £350-£400 ish second hand

I still have 3 of the above. I think all have been great buys. As you can see I have spent nowhere near £1200 most of the time.

Hah I've been here. Bump the price up a bit and suddenly you're closer to something even better that's just out of budget :)

Yes I thought the same ....

well that is one of the best TV's you can buy. It's also 65" which is ridiculous. My mate has a 65" sony and it's actually mind blowing how big it is.

It's all relative that I could sit closer to my 55" for the same experience but TV's have got to the point where they may no longer look to make panels any bigger than say around 75". The market for say an 80" tv would be so small, it may not be worthwhile.

I think 50" is small now. I've had one for 3 years. However I'm set in the tv stakes for a few years now.

TV in the bedroom has now given up the ghost :(

This is now forcing my hand to buy a TV for the living room and move that TV to the bedroom :)
