Hi,

I have two 770s in SLI at the moment, and I've wanted to upgrade to a single card for a while, I waited for the 1070/1080 release and I waited for the 480 release.

I have a 1440p monitor, I want a card which is a significant upgrade from my 770s and that will last a good few years. In terms of budget, I don't really wanna spend more than £400 so I think it's a question of 1070 or 980 ti.

Is now a good time to upgrade and if so which card should I get? Will the 980 ti prices go down any further since the 480 release? It's tempting to hit buy on the EVGA 980 Ti SC+ right now for £389 :p

I would seriously consider spending an extra £50 or less and getting a 1070 if buying new. The most recent architecture will fare better with driver optimisations, particularly with upcoming DX12/Vulkan games.

For the same price you can get the Zotac Amp Extreme if you look around. Nearly 1080 performance when OCed.

Thanks for the replies, seems like 1070 is definitely the one to go for! Good shout on the zotac amp extreme ;) I'm also looking at the gigabyte g1 1070 for a little more, which would you go for?

The only other question is now or wait?

Now see this is my predicament .... ive just ordered and had a new cpu/mobo/ram to replace my aging 965be cpu with atm a 270x 4gb card . Now i'm not currently gaming on my pc , but as I have a 4k tv i'm toying with the idea of a graphics card upgrade . Or wait 6 months for a nice drop and then make sure my whole pc is 4k capable.

Not sure why people are recommending the GTX 1070 - isn't the GTX 980 Ti faster when OC'd? Pretty sure I'd go for the GTX 980 Ti myself, especially when you can get them a fair bit cheaper.

uses less power, has more ram, has more features, is on par with a 1500mhz 980 ti when both overclocked, will increase with future drivers, runs cooler, better VR performance

grab the 1070 or get a 980ti if your feeling dumb

a 1070 should do 9k on the mem and 2100 on the core easy

even my founders did, actually founders overclock better so id grab one of them imo plus the cooler is Legit! :p

a £175 pound card is not going to lower the price of a 980 ti? a ford focus st isn't going to lower the price of a Porsche 911

and tbh im surprised the 980 ti has dropped that low, if anything they may stay at that price or go up slightly

I prefer the look of the Zotac GTX 1070 AMP Extreme. I have one pre-ordered ;)

Build quality also looks better than the Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 but it is a 2.5 slot card which you have to keep in mind if you have space issues in your case.

Zotac Amp Extreme all the way. I have their triple fan 780Ti and it's.a.great card. Quite tempted by this myself, but my 780Ti is still great at 1080P.

Would not buy a 980ti new, unless you can get one "nearly new" for around £300. 2GB more vram, wattage in par with a 970, and still subject to driver optimisations coming up.

GTX 1070 all the way. Newer tech & higher resale value.

GTX 980 Ti is internally @ Nvidia already EOL. sooner or later it will depreciate even more (mine is already 50% less than I paid for it 11 months ago so no point selling as its a decent 2nd PC GPU @ 1920x1080 for a few years yet!).

just picked up a 980 Ti strix for £359 that does 1500 on the core a 1070 isn't beating that tbf personally I'd pick up the Ti as maxwell and pascal are so similar that drivers wont matter as much as it did with kepler and maxwell as they're much more different

2nd hand 980ti is the best bet. Cheap, tonnes of performance per pound spent. If I was buying new I'd get the 1070 but tbh there isn't much in it so if I was on a budget the 980ti would still be a good bet.

Just got home from a hard day at work and ordered a Gigabyte G1 1070.

Seems to be a lot of mixed opinions in here but I went for that one because I'm not really on a tight budget so don't mind spending a bit more and hopefully it'll be a bit more future proof than a 980 Ti, especially a 2nd hand one.

Thanks for all the advice :)
