Yup. That would be a good way.
IIRC it has a microsd slot so I'd use that over the USB.

You could install a boot loader on to a usb stick which points to your OS on the SSD

MicroSD card on the board, install GRUB or some other boot loader to it then point it at the SSD. That's how I got around it on the Gen8.

Stupid the way they provisioned those ports, but hey.
