I've decided to go for a second hand 970 for now.

It's pointless getting anything better as it will be under utilized and when I upgrade to 4k I'll need to replace it anyway.

I would not recommend the 1060 its in a bad price point go for a second hand 980ti if you want nvidia or i would say a 480/390 cant go wrong.

I don't understand how people (not only the guy above) can say the 1060 is in a bad price point and then go on to recommend a 480, unless you specifically mean the 4GB variants as both the 1060 and 8GB 480's start at £229.99.

So surely if one is in a bad price point, then so is the other.

i wouldnt touch a 970 with a bargepole, especially not given what you can buy for that budget nowadays.

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my Radeon R7 265 as I think it is finally starting to struggle @ 1080p my budget is also up to £300 max but I must admit I am confused by the ram requirements other than I know 2GB is not suitable any more :D I think 4GB would be ample as I don't plan to change my monitor (or at least not in the short term) but then I have found a few games that would like even more.

I see some people reccomend the 4GB variant of the RX480 but I do like to make my cards last a good while to save being shot by the wife I usually go in 2-3 year cycles if possible, would a 8GB variant be more suitable in the long term?

The CPU I am currently running is the good ol FX6300 (4.4ghz) but I will be changing over to the Zen/DDR4 when they arrive.

Any help appreciated :)

Nothing wrong with a GTX 970 at 1080p, still punches hard enough to run most games at their highest settings.

1060 is at least £100 more than second a second hand 970, for what 10% more performance? Guess the RX480 Nitro 4GB would have been the best option between saving some money and getting a new card with warranty.

Agreed regarding RX480 but tell me are any, with decent coolers, in stock?

second hand card comes with its own set of problems, no warranty, may die soon after it's bought and all that for what? To save £50? Makes no sense to me.

It's true but I've had my 7970, which I bought second hand, for 4 years and it's still going. :)

980Ti is perfect for 1440p if you can get a good 2nd hand card. Gigabyte and EVGA both have a transferable warranty. Stay away from the 970 as it was terrible for 1440p, I had one for 6months and can honestly say it was the worst card I have ever owned. OCuk refunded me as Nvidia never came forward with a fix.

Other than that you should consider the Fury if still on sale, if not then the RX480.

I cancelled my 480 pre order and went for the Fury as I couldn't wait. It's great so far but £300 is a lot of money so what do you expect..you generally get what you pay for.
