As a family we have enjoyed using Picasa for years. I love how it lists your named folders in the year they were taken and its powerful, but simple to use, editing and fix tools have been amazing.
Alas Google are retiring it now in favour of "Photos"......

Desktop application
As of March 15, 2016, we will no longer be supporting the Picasa desktop application. For those who have already downloaded this—or choose to do so before this date—it will continue to work as it does today, but we will not be developing it further, and there will be no future updates. If you choose to switch to Google Photos, you can continue to upload photos and videos using the desktop uploader at photos.google.com/apps.
Sad times as I have tried so many other photo browsers and yet always come back to using Picasa.
Whilst the application itself will continue to function as a desktop application there will be no further development or support after March 15th.
The web albums will start to end around May 1st.
