Hi

Thinking to upgrade my mobo, cpu and memory.

Picked out from OCUK

i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor

Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

I will not be overclocking or doing anything fancy so will be running SPD.

Say i bought Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black

what would be the base memory clock speed be if i was running everything on default SPD (it wouldnt run at 3000mhz) as the chip is only limited to 2133mhz speeds right? Try to get my head around this again :p

Is it a waste to buy that higher clocked memory when i am not going to overclock?

All you need to do on Z170 is enable XMP in the BIOS. It will set the RAM to 3000MHz and keep the CPU at stock speed. This is unlike X99, where if you set the RAM to 2666MHz or above, the CPU frequency changes.

The official DDR4 spec states 2133MHz as the standard speed, hence why Intel publish the chip as suitable for 2133MHz. The chip is not limited to 2133MHz, that's just the official speed.
